It sounds like you may have a fuel issue, i.e. dirty fuel or water in the fuel. Mine is super smooth (granted I had the entire fuel delivery system changed thanks to a cheap fuel pump on Ebay) following a complete clean of the fuel tank, fuel system and inlet tract.

If it is the famous 1/4 tank issue, then the dealer will have to sort it out. And the fuel pump at "normal" price is quite "stiff", in the 300+ range !!. Mine was 50 thanks to Will spotting it on Ebay |

Possibly due to the higher fuel flow required but the TD6's have had the odd one fail as well in this way as its the balancing part that burgers up!

Sometimes when you start it the viscous fan can be partly engaged and give the effect of the engine racing, mine does this quite often, it's nothing to worry about - my guess is this is what you / your wife has noticed.
