Hi All

Does any one know how the red/orange clips release from the fuel filter on a 2003 4.4 range rover. Need to change the filter tonight if possible and cant see how they release, dont want to force and break them!

thanks Stan but already got that page. in the instructions it says release the fuel line clips but cant work out how they come off the filter. They are really tight and dont want to pull too hard and break them.

So update on the filter problem:

these are pics of the red clips. Other sites suggest using a flat screwdriver to carefully depress the clips in the centre of the clip, but other sites suggest using a small spanner to prise the pipe off. Any one with any other ideas??

Look like push / pull connectors

Am guessing a bit here:

1. Liberal spray with WD40 or preferred easing solution
2. Push fuel line towards filter
3. Pull "red" cap towards fuel line
4. Remove connector ?

May need to do this and "wiggle" (the connector ) a few times.

Alternatively try the other way (pull fuel line / push connector).....

[EDIT] Hmmm read up a bit more, seems maybe a special BMW tool required for tamper proof fuel lines. Possibly the black clips inside the red cap need depressing - something like reverse circlip pliers ? .

I recently changed the filter on my V8

Joe90 is correct,the fuel line needs to be pushed towards the filter and the red cap needs to be pushed into the fuel line and then it all slides off at once.They are pretty stiff to get off so I used a 2 pronged trim removal tool.It fit nicely over the metal pipe part of the filter which helped me push evenly the red part of the clip back onto the fuel line.If you dont have one of these you could get a flat piece of metal and trim it into a U-shape to help you out Matt.

I thought from reading and research on the internet that they required a special tool but was told that was not the case by a Landy mechanic and that they are indeed quick release connectors but only when you know how...!!


Don't use a screwdriver and go prying at the clip as they are very easy to break and will require replacement of the fuel line to the fuel pump because of the integrated design of the clip/line

Thanks for your reply! I went to my local dealership this morning to ask one of their mechanics and he confirmed that there is no special tool, just lots of patience and fiddling required. Out of interest they wanted £180 excluding parts to change the filter!

I just spent an hour pulling, prodding and prizing trying to get these clips off. If my life depended on it I couldn’t get them off.

Absolute nightmare... it’s really caused me an issue.

All over the web and YouTube people seem to be able to get them off. They must have some special bloody skills.
