Overheating Venture Cam ....might be worth checking yours !

H Guys

Just wanted to post a cautionary tale which I have experienced recently. When I bought my car which is 6 years old, one thing that didn’t work was the Venture Cam and the plan was to split it and install some new batteries as per one of the excellent write ups on this site.

For quite a while I never gave it a thought until one day I was explaining about it to a friend and I took it out of the glove box and to my surprise it was working (I had previously cleaned the contacts). Just recently I was explaining it to someone else about the system and removed it from the glove box only to discover it was very, very hot indeed, not just warm but potentially dangerously hot.

So I have removed mine pending getting around to stripping it, I don’t know how long it had been like this or whether it would have resulted in potentially serious damage to either the vehicle electrics or glove box structure or worse but I thought it was worth highlighting to the forum.

Cheers B ...Always time for a brew !!

Lay it on the ground while traversing rocks to check ground clearnce

Use it as a torch

Attach it to a broomhandle and get kids / wife to direct it at the underside of the car while you look for leaks, damage or rust

I believe the reciever can also 'scan' and connect to wireless (some use bluetooth) security cameras.

I agree on the whole it will spend most of its time in the holder in most peoples cars but top marks for innovation by LR.

If you have little ones, set it up to look at their carseat instead of using a mirror!! 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Idea The battery pack has a thermistor in the middle of the cells which should prevent charging if the battery pack becomes too hot.

+1 for horsebox, also solo hitching [trailer assist not available for FF].
I use the venture-cam a lot and never leave it in its holder unless it needs charging.
