It has been chipped, and delivers more power than most "chippers" will normally offer.

It is driven hard, but does highlight how weak the GM box actually is.

Sorry to hear this.

However when I was doing my research prior to buying my FF I came across a post on Landy Zone from a chap with a user name of Bemble. I don't know the guy, but from his comments he seems to know his Gear boxes, although I think I'm right in saying here he's talking about a Petrol ZF box on this occasion.

The BMW M62-engined L322 uses the ZF 5HP24 transmission.

I rebuild them for a hobby (I have five in my garage at the moment). I'm not sure why you're asking but, just for info., there's 27 different versions of this transmission and the L322 one (1058 000 032) is totally unique to the Range Rover i.e. you can't use a 5HP24 from a Jaguar or a BMW - not even from the X5. They won't fit.

Make sure that you use Esso LT71141 fluid. It costs £29/litre from a Jaguar dealer, about £17/litre from a Land Rover dealer, but I buy it in 20 litre containers for the equivalent of £7/litre. Don't even think about using Dexron as it has a different static-to-dynamic friction characteristic which will wreck the controlled-slip lock up clutch in the torque converter (it has no torsional vibration damper). You must use LT71141.

When you drain the fluid you'll probably only get around half (5 litres) of the fluid out - the rest is retained in the torque converter, oil cooler & valve block.

When you set the fluid level (via the combined filler/level plug) you must do it with the engine running otherwise you'll be more than a litre down on capacity, and the fluid temperature should be 'warm' i.e. at around 40 deg. C.

Rebuilding the transmission is a piece of cake - you just need one or two special tools making up for compressing the clutch springs etc. but, yes, they're really dead easy to do. An official ZF overhaul kit costs about £140, a pipe set around £25, the fluid about £70, filter £25 and a remanufactured torque converter around £200, so that's less than £500. Land Rover charge £3300 for a remanufactured transmission. Now that's how to make money!

No warning for me when my gearbox went, drive just disappeared on the way home one evening. Somehow managed to coax it back the last two miles, losing drive in the middle of junctions during rush hour is not funny. Crept onto my drive, and then the whole thing seized up. (This was at 92500 miles)

Recovery lorry had to drag the RR onto the back, then LR had to drag it out of the corner he dropped it in. (Sadly they used an RRS!)

LR fitted new (?) gearbox for £2495.

Still recovering (been off the medication for PTSD for a couple of months now!), but all going strong 16000 miles later. Only issue is that switching for high to low ratios and back again doesn't work. Have to turn RR off then on again to get back to high range. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

I know we are talking about the GM box here, but I can assure you ZF also has its major problems in other car makes... Ask Audi. Java with Ivory 2006 4.2 Supercharged. 23.5k miles - NOW SOLD!

Box on the td6 gave up last week still waiting for warranty to inspect. Started with a slight vibration and slow gear changes then no drive at all in the last 18 months it`s had a fuel pump. suspension compressor. front suspension leg. radiator. viscous fan coupling. gearbox and torque convertor oh and a battery. Should have a new car by christmas if it keeps on like this. : : Shocked

Can anyone recommend a good indy in the north west who will do an ATF change on an 03 FFRR. Mines just gone over 100k and although it's fine I'd like to get it done soon for piece of mind
