Rear differential on 4.2 SC

My 4.2 SC rear diff now as leaks on all three couplings. The leaks on the drive shaft couplings are negligible, more like weeps, but the prop shaft coupling leak is more recent and substantial.

I will be looking at repairs but at this age (156k), I am also considering replacement if I can find a reputable service exchange or refurbished diff option. Whilst repair is likely to be cheaper in the short term, there my be a longer term case for replacement, especially if I can get a good deal on fitment.

I would be interested to hear the experience of others and any recommended suppliers. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

If it is simply the seals which have gone then it will be a lot cheaper to fix it, so long as the internals are ok then there is no reason it wont last another 150k before going again. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Most important is to check for water ingress... Check the oil condition first and if no water then i agree with above Thumbs Up

Lots of leaks happen because water gets in, rusts the shafts which Censored the seals Rolling Eyes etc etc etc

Land Rover replacement is £1600-£1900

Transmission companies usually cost £800-£1000 to refurb them Thumbs Up

Took the RR to a local independent land rover specialist at Wicken near Ely to sort out leaking seals. When they were able to inspect the diff properly, rather than waving a torch whilst lying upside down on the drive under the car, they found that the breather was blocked and that oil was trickling down over the three couplings.

They unblocked the breather, cleaned the diff and test drove to see if the problem was solved. All for £50.

Big relief. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

Indeed, have bought the oil already. Only changed it a few months ago but was planning another change as there was so much debris on the magnetic drain plug that I wanted to see if this was still accumulating.

The latest leakage epidote reinforces the need for change as I am not sure how much has been lost through the breather. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

I finally got round to replacing the diff oil after the breather blockage. Attached are pics of the diff drain plug magnet. Large gritty metallic deposits. I only changed the oil 6 months ago at which time the drain plug had a 10-15mm thick dense deposit attached go it. I thought it would be clean this time. Also in six months the oil has gone from a fresh urine appearance to black.

Anyway, fingers crossed that all is well. I gave the outside of the diff a good clean with Gunk so that I can monitor for any new leaks. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4
