Wiring in a hidden lighter....how to?

Ok, I've bought a dash cam and it comes with a wire with a small usb plug for the camera end and a big thing for shoving in a lighter socket on the other end.

I'd like to have the wire 'disappear' somewhere round the headling into the depths of the dash and become live when the ignition is turned on.

I can get a lighter socket from Swiss Maplins but I'm not sure where I should wire it in. I have seen a thread on it but can't find it. Please would some nice kind someone point me to the thread or advise? You can have some of my Stilton - and no, that's not a sexual euphamism.

Buy one of these below and fit a 5A fuse in it.

Connect your lighter socket centre pin to the above adapter with a length of 5A cable.
Connect your lighter socket side pin to a suitable earth bolt with a length of 5A cable
Plug piggy back connector into unused Fuse 7 on the glovebox fuseboard.
Locate lighter socket above access panel above feet area in passenger footwell. (RHD) May be other side of car for LHD.
Insert plug on cable from camera into lighter socket and run cable to camera.
Switch on ignition and camera should work. Thumbs Up

Thanks nicedayforit. I had a suspician it would be you who came in first.

I had no idea there's a fuseboard in the glovebox.

Sorry, I've finished all the Stilton.

Have some rather nice orange sorbet if you're interested?

Should have said "fuseboard below glovebox" assuming it is the same on a LHD.

Orange sorbet would be fine. Thumbs Up Smile

Here's how I ran the cable for mine.

I've since moved the camera to be lower & central.

I cut the cable on the end to remove the lighter socket, bolted the -ve to the metal frame under the glove box & found an unused fuse that was +12v only when the ignition was on - empty fuse slot

I then soldered the +ve wire to win in-line fide and crimpled the other end to a spade terminal & cut it down to be the same size as a a blade fuse and pushed into the empty fuse holder.

I hope that makes sense.

Fuse box is behind the glove box.

No stilton or sorbet were needed for my installation Thumbs Up
