Advice needed chaps. Been googling and lots of contradictory comments are not helping.

I have just acquired an old Porsche 924 as a project and need to get it home. I thought if a friend towed it with a metal bar and I sat in it, that my insurance would cover me 3rd party. I have that clause on my policy.
I thought it would not need tax and mot as it was in effect a trailer by virtue of the fact it was being towed with the bar.
Am I wrong? Is the only way to legally bring it back a trailer with all 4 wheels off the ground?

Just a thought for you....you cant carry passengers in a caravan or on trailers while moving on puplic roads

I would get yourself a trailer and put the car on it, just to be safe and YOU drive the FF  If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

As you have acquired it, it is owned by you and so your insurance does not cover it. All 4 wheels must be off the road, so the old style ambulance thingy is now illegal. Oh and if it is for business your tow vehicle needs a taco. letters not necessarily in the right order

The more I think about it, I think I'll just hire a trailer.

As someone who's transported a car on a trailer (my VX), I would recommend hiring a proper transporter trailer. My trailer wasn't ideal for a car, even a 900kg one. Any bigger and you're better off with a proper transporter.

Loading my VX that height was nerve wracking and took a lot of effort, and to get it through the Swiss mot I had to do it 3 times. You can see from the video how easily things can go wrong, although yes, most of the people were very stupid.

Kurts right,get a car transporter trailer as the centre of mass will be lower down and much easier for the towing vehicle to control.Having hired a proper car trailer occasionally,it is really worth it as there will be no arguement when it comes to the boys in blue if your stopped or involved in an accident.As they say if in doubt there is no doubt

My +1 to the all four wheels off the ground rule. If a car has an MOT & tax it can be towed (insurance aside), but no MOT (or tax) means it mustn't touch the public highway unless en route to an MOT appointment.

I too have used a proper car trailer in the past without issues. If you end up with a large trailer that isn't a proper car trailer, I'd use a hand winch so you can avoid most of the problems in that video!

been down this road before and I would strongly advise you use a trailer.

If you own the car you will need to insure it as your 3rd party will only cover you for a vehicle you don't own and that vehicle must be insured in it's own right.

It would only be classed as a trailer if it was on an A-bar or on a towing dolly and you would then not be allowed to sit in it.

If the vehicle has not got an MOT then it can only be driven to and from an MOT test station for a pre-booked MOT and back or to a pre booked appointment at a garage to fix any MOT failure points.

If you are confident the car is roadworthy and it runs you could insure it on a temporary policy and book it into an MOT station locally to your home and collect the car, drive it to its pre-booked MOT, have the MOT done and then drive it home. You may be lucky and get a pass, just depends on the current state of the vehicle

I have sourced a company in Dundee, about 8 miles away, that hire proper car trailers for £40 a day.
It's a no brainer at that price.
Booked for Saturday.
I have three offers of tow vehicles... A 2010 FFRR, a 2006 sport or a 2014 new sport! Previously..

phone them and ask if you get the wheel straps with it. hire them if not. (or borrow) you MUST strap it to the trailer or the VOSA patrol cars will 'ave ya! handbrake not enough! ( look at a picture of how people strap them, for guidance) lastly, cover part of the trailered car's number plate with gaffer tape otherwise the ANPR cameras on the Fuzz's cars will be going apeshat. don't encourage them! I use an independent company at about £50 for the day. they always inspect the tyres on takeback, as people have habit of grazing the sidewalls etc, so be carefull.
enjoy your Porsche. ....even though it got a van engine in it.

just to add to johnboy's advice. when you strap the Porsche on to the trailer make sure the straps, metal ratchets or loose ends of the straps can't rub against the body work.

I learnt the hard way and has to respray a small area on the side of one of my Elan's

not sure about the sports but with the FF you will need to be careful you don't forget about the trailer being on the back. my 3.6 pulled a car trailer easily, the 4.4 in a 2010 will just be a breeze 56 TDV8 Vogue SE
