Viewing a car with Screen display LR and left knob flashing

Hi all, sorry to be brief and not do a good search, I viewed this nice 55 reg FF at an independant dealer today and he said the only problem is the fact despite the screen is live with the LR logo every function is not available. He states he has bills the previous owner paid in the region of £1800 to replace "everything in the boot" so it may be the head display. He is willing to be flexible on the price if its a sold as seen.
my question I guess is are the heads reliable or is it likely to be that by peoples experience. The more thought I give it and while writing this Im inclined to walk away, such as shame as its nice and 87k on the clock.
Appreciate your thoughts and experience please.

The problem could be any one of several things...

Fuse: would need to check all fuses in front glovebox and rear loadspace areas.
Any one of the MOST system items, e.g. HK amp, CD Autochanger (in glovebox), TMC unit, Nokia Bluetooth unit, TV module, RSE units (if fitted), or possibly the head unit (though probably unlikely if the screen is working). You would need to do the bypass test on the fibre optic cables to each unit in turn to test.
Sat Nav unit, software could be scrambled, or disc not working.

As with anything, the problem could be an easy thing to sort, or an expensive PITA.

Thanks so much for the replies guys, I can now see its a path well trodden.
Penny to a pinch its going to be water ingress, but given the circumstances of it being for sale obviously a good root round and play would be difficult.
Its one of those times when you weigh it up and it would be a worthwhile punt if you have the b*lls for it,
but I feel I have not particularly as I have not owned one before and Im still getting my head around all the gadgets and features I come across and making sure they work.

With all due respect sir, if you have never owned a FFRR before and this will be your first purchase... Think very carefully about buying A, a car from a dealer that either is ignorant to the issues the car he is selling has. Or B, is in over his head and knows it...

When buying your first FF. Buy from someone you can trust, or get an evaluation done by someone you can trust sir... Well worth it in the long run Thumbs Up

IMHO walk away sir - there are plenty out there and you will find the right one - issues can be difficult and expensive to fix and I would imagine this is the case here - if not, dealer would have got it sorted BEFORE trying to sell it. Me thinks he knows rather more than he is letting on!! Big Cry 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)
