To condition or not condition - that is the question

HI Have cleaned my seats using Gliptone leather cleaner which seems to have worked really well. 108,000 miles and suspect the seats have not seen much of a clean in that time (shame on me) and the results are really good. However, there seems to be varying view here and across the internet as to whether conditioning your seats does as much harm as good ? 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

Gliptone Conditioner seems to work very well. Never had a problem with it. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

I always take the view of doing a seat at a time, so full wash and dry cycle, counting the back seats as one entire unit due to their contact with each other and then conditioning after a good while to dry.

The drivers seat would get done on a weekend when i knew i would have no need of the car so could let it soak and work in without leaving it in anyway sticky as the steering wheel could be done at the same time.

Make sure there is no dirt or crumbs or stuff on the seats at all and just gently work it in by finger tip Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

leather needs feeding to keep it supple. If you clean it you should feed it. Thumbs Up 2020 Porsche Panamera Turbo Hybrid (V FAST)

Well, I always used to believe the whole conditioning thing and when I look back it was the cleanliness I was impressed with.

Last year I did one of those leather renovating courses and it was then I discovered exactly what the colouring is made up of. Basically it's paint and impervious to water, gels, creams etc.

There are many processes involved with leather and it depends on the intended application. These range from connollising to tanning etc and the tougher the usage then the more the leather is prepared.

As an example, imagine a top quality chamois leather, nice and soft etc. Then imagine making it into a seat base. Without treatment to harden it off and protect the surface it would fall apart the first time it was sat on. Then look at why you wouldn't use neatsfoot oil on car leather yet all equestrian places use it on saddles. Basically it's a solvent which will remove the surface colouring from your average car seats.

So yes, Gliptone is good at cleaning and leaving a nice smell, and it does protect the surface from other dirt, but it doesn't sink into the leather like a lot of people would believe. The only leather it might sink into is that which has the surface treatment worn through etc, i.e. old and knackered stuff.

BTW, Highly recommend those one day leather renovation courses. It's amazing what you can do once you know how. Thumbs Up

Nothing but more paint ! Gliptone do some colour match kits specifically in range rover colours for scratches etc. I have never used on a car seat but recently used the black on a tumi brief case with excellent results and to date it's not rubbed of on anything. 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

As above, trying to "condition" surface-coated leather can only be counter-productive.

So what's best to stop it cracking and wearing through ?

Is there a creame you can add to help dirt wipe off the surface ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
