May seem a bit lame, but there is plenty to worry about when simply disconnecting the battery. Here is my howto:

Are there any important tips for recharging of L322 batteries whilst still fitted/connected to the car, or when jump-starting other vehicles

Recharging whilst connected up is not recommended by the handbook, not sure what might happen if you try. Have been looking at using a solar charger through the aux socket or cigar lighter. This apparently works OK on newer Discos but not found any compelling evidence to do the same on an RR. To jump other cars, LR kindly provided easy access connectors "away from the battery". The (+) is in a little black compartment in front of the battery box, and the (-) is the nut on top of the suspension turret. As always just make sure you get them round the right way! Full instructions are in the Owners Handbook. (This advice based on the '02 model) . Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Did you manage to get your Solar charger connected and working? I am looking to the same solution, as my car is left abroad for weeks at a time and I have a satellite tracker fitted. I prefer the option of connecting to the LR approved terminals, did you find a quick and easy way of routing the cables back into the car?

I have a solar charger connected to the boot aux socket. Doesn't seem to do anything. However have moved on from there, and have a Ctek MXS 5.0 battery charger with trailer socket to charge and trickle. All works well with battery connected. .

Nothing to stop you connecting a solar charger by way of a permanently live accessory socket in the car, will work as well as anything. Be aware that you have to disconnect any solar battery charger before you attempt to start the car, if you don't the solar panel diode can blow resulting in the solar charger becoming a source of battery drain. Another way to connect a solar charger inside the car is to plug into a permanently live fuse in the front fuse board using a piggy back connector. If you do this you will need an in-line switch for the reason above. Most solar panel chargers are useless imo in a car unless the nominal output is at least 15W or thereabouts. It would be worth measuring the battery drain on your car initially to see what sort of output any solar charger needs to keep your battery topped up. |

The same is stated in my 2010 Handbook. How ever I regularly charge my battery without disconnecting. Think I have a 4,5 Amp charger. So far no problems  Range Rover TdV8 Autobiography MY2010
