Gents, can you please educate me with regards to the MOT. If my UK registered FFRR is "habituated" outside the UK (not yet but probably in the near future), what are the legal requirements for the MOT ??

I would have thought that unless the box has been ticked on the V5 form, new keeper section, to say "exported", then the DVLA will not know any better, and expect the car to have a valid MOT ?

I don't think you will have issues , plenty of people forget it's expired. Even then we don't get reminders!
As a UK owner, most uncertainty is whether insurance will pay out if MOT had lapsed. Alcohol and eBay is never a good mix

It would all depend on the country you are in and there laws.

I moved from the UK to Jersey and had to change my car registration plate over to a jersey plate as I was staying here with the car , to get the plate the car had a very in depth style of MOT check more like you have on HGV's in the UK.

But once that is done and passed there is no MOT over here it is left up to the owner to keep it in a road worthy condition.
We do have spot checks and your car can be impounded if it is seen to be unroad worthy but these checks only do the basics.
Only if you have a serious accident would your car have the full check done and if it fails and the accident is your fault you will get the book thrown at you

I looked into this recently- if it's for >12 months, you need to tell DVLA that its permanently exported.

For <12 months you need an MOT and road tax !!!

In my experience, the DVLA will send you a letter if you have an address in the UK, but insurance in the UK is not possible without an MOT and paying roadtax. Road tax, Mot and insurance seem to be linked nowadays. Just got a letter from the DVLA that my car was not insured in the UK although My MOT is valid until Febr next year and my roadtax is paid for until august this year. I had either to insure it or SORN it. My car is insured in France. ...? So I do not think there is a way around all that to keep your UK license.

Hi Robert, thanks. I don't think insurance will cover me anyway when I ship it to Malaysia, have to get another insurance here for that. Road tax will be refunded for unused part when exported I understand.

All you need to do is mark as Exported and then claim the tax back for the remaining full months and job done

I can remember when things were much more straightforward.

Once upon a time you were presumed innocent until proven guilty, Not that I condone driving without insurance, tax and MOT. But now your guilty even if the car is parked, unused and its not insured.

A good few with insured cars that are untaxed but with MOT sat on a drive or yard can get the penalty now.

I don't mind paying the tax, insurance and MOT as long as the car is in the UK. I just don't want to burden my friends with driving it to the MOT center if I can not do it myself. At the end of the year (well Oct hopefully) I will ship the car anyway.

I was wondering what happens when I'm too late with MOT or just don't do it. The car will pass with flying colours I'm sure.

Nothing really as you'll only receive a fine if it's driven on the road iirc.

Before you come over just book it into the cheapest place you can online as some will do it for £25 so it will a aw some pennies especially if they can't fail it in anything  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I've had a word with my local MOT centre about this issue because I'll be going back to Italy hopefully for about 8 months with my motor but when I return the MOT will have expired.

His suggestion was to MOT the RR again just before I leave the UK even though there would be 8 months left on the current MOT. I'd then have the full 12 months on the new MOT which would also cover my return back to the UK.

So that's what I'll be doing with mine. It will be worth the £30 and if anything shows up on the MOT I'll be able to get it sorted in the UK rather than abroad.  Travelling around in circles again.
