Wayne. One of the 'old salts' at Drysdale River Station. Bit of an outback character. "Just got back from fixin' a f*&%'n busted truck about 60 miles down the track mate. Bastard of a thing. Took all bloody night."

I've driven that road.

I decided at the time that taking my V8 D1 (bought in Victoria and shipped to Karratha) would have been a bad idea as petrol is pretty scarce, so we hired a diesel Pajero instead. It got a fair old pummelling, but we treated it with respect. Those corrugations can be pretty bad, as you observed.

We stayed at Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge, just before it was taken over by the state authorities.

Without doubt, it's been the best holiday of our lives.

This was one of the roads at Mount Hart and we made it across just fine.

Yeah, we've camped at Mt Hart too, when I took the RRS up there three years ago. Nice place, particularly that old homestead. Cracker of an outdoor bar. Just have to get through about 20 creek crossings to get there.
The petrol D1 would have been a bad idea. Lots of stretches where you can't get unleaded, only diesel. 2012 L322 TDV8 Luxury

Yep. And added to the butchery of a head rebuild that the supplying garage had done to it before it was sold to me would have meant had it not ran out of fuel, I think the head would have blown completely 'somewhere' and it'd still be there now.

You're right about the bar at Mt Hart. Thumbs Up

I did establish one important thing. Leaving the Pajero in 2wd meant it got out of shape on severe corrugations. Permanent 4wd (or the numpty in the driving seat not selecting it...) is far less scary. Si. <This is my name.

I wonder what sort of temperatures would be involved (must be quite hot for seals to fail) and whether there is a way of making a small self contained liquid cooling unit (non powered preferably).

Like a small double walled pipe that connects to a little radiator that is mounted in a spot that allows for good cooling. Some really heavy duty hydraulic hoses that are difficult to damage.

There must be a few handy people that can make it work.

Can anyone send me or point me to some pics of the shocks and the shocks in position, so I can have a little think about it as well ??

Would be cool to invent something to eliminate this problem. Not that there is a big market for it but just nice to resolve it. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

There are some systems available, and external reservoir shocks are supposed to run cooler.

Remember the standard ones are ECU-controlled, probably not simple to mess with.

That video I posted last night should give you an idea of the shock and its positioning/dimensions, don't have any stills. I would think some kind of heat sink wrapped around it might be a start to help keep it cooler. 2012 L322 TDV8 Luxury

It sure was hot. The oil was literally smoking as it dribbled out. 2012 L322 TDV8 Luxury

That is in quite a good position to fit a fin type heat sink for sure. Also a liquid cooling type should work quite well on this. It would be interesting to know if just cooling the reservoir would help or whether cooling the shock itself (with the valve arrangement) is the critical part here.

Years ago we were investigating heat sinks for cooling down pipes (offshore welding). You can find a lot of standard designs online and alternatively you should be able to have simple aluminium heat sinks online. Getting good contact between the heat sink and the tube (in this case) is a bit more difficult. There are supposed to be compounds that can do that, can't remember what but in the electronics business this is a common issue so maybe start looking there.

I can see a liquid cooling idea working as well and will have a little think on how that can be done. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

With hindsight, how is this avoided? Obviously, you can't drive faster than death speed as you break tyres and other bits. 15km/h is rather slow. Would you be safe with the cruise at 15 all day? Could you drive normally for, say, 30 minutes, then stop for 5 to cool down, and repeat? Would chucking some water on them help? The temperatures and distances involved are just so far out of what people normally expect.

Heath Robinson - water mist spray, like the ones for intercoolers or brakes.

What you need is silicone heat sink compound, available from RS Components, Farnell, and many other electronic distributors. This is used widely in electronics on Power Transistors, which are destroyed if they overheat, so they are fitted to a heat sink, with the compound providing good thermal conductivity (transfer of heat) between the component and heat sink. Only issue is, there are different grades, and high thermal conductivity grades (the best) tend to be expensive. 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

Wouldn't a simpler solution be an overheating alarm for the suspension, that alerts the driver on the dashboard display? It would hardly be a technical stretch, given the amount of tech and computer wizardry LR have packed into these cars already. 2012 L322 TDV8 Luxury
