If I may be so bold as to offer my ten-penneth worth then don't get too hung up on only buying from dealers (including main).

I have had 5 Range Rover, 4 Disco's & 2 Defenders - some I've bought from main dealers and have been an absolute nightmare (opposite also true) and some I've bought privately that have been a joy to own (again opposite also true).

One advantage of buying privately is you get to meet the people who've owned the vehicle previously and the type of people they are. Just because someone has enough money to buy from an LR dealership doesn't mean they know how to look after a car (especially one as complex as an FFRR).

I buy by the golden rule that if something just doesn't feel right then walk away. If everything fits then chances are it'll be ok but seldom does this mean the cheapest alternative.

Sorry - have I made things worse????!

I've owned my td6 54 plate for approx 2 months now, I'ts the best car I have ever driven.
bought it private and like said above I got to meet the guy who owned it. That says a lot in itself as you get a feel for how they look after and maintain the car. I've loved every minute of driving so far, they are beautiful awsome cars.

Misreading gearbox temperature
Whining front diff
CD autochanger not working
Air con compressor not working

I will get these sorted. It isn't an old car thing, my other cars are a 2004 911 turbo, 2000 NSX and 2002 M3 cab. They just keep working, but none can tow the trailer. Oh yes, mine had a recon gearbox 12 months ago at 75k miles.
I have no plans to sell, a man needs a hobby.....

I can totally relate, I was 9 years old when our neighbour bought the first model and that was what I wanted ever since...

As you can read, most owner on here will rather not buy shoes or sell their wife in order to keep the FFRR

I have owned 2 x Jeep GC's both V8, 2 x Jag XJR's 1 6 and 1 V8, a Boxter, some BMW's etc, so I know about bills, but just maybe at the FFRR level.

Funny, I keep thinking of getting an XJR. Not to replace the FF though.

Stunning cars, 400bhp, 0-62 around 5secs and has a feel good factor like a FFRR Recommended.

A 100K car will have a 100K car maintenance costs all its life .... even if you buy a 2002/2003 between 10 to 14K€ these days in France .

If the car has been properly looked after , there will be no major issues as those will have happened before you buy it .
Within this forum you have clear guidance of what you have to check .
Looks like you are used to a bit of power from the previous cars you owned , in that case don't buy a TD6 ( underpowered and suspect GM gearbox )
you will like the 4.4 V8 BMW engine and the ZF box much better .

and the fisrt thing you have to buy is a IID tool that will save you lot's of Euros !!! ( also very well documented in this forum . ) Jaybear

Thing to remember is, majority of people only post when they have a problem, go onto a Merc forum & type in SBC pump w211 Mercedes, about two grand a pop, likewise BMW and read all the horror tales about engines eating inlet flaps, blown turbos, and wrecked engines four to six grand a pop, for all the ones that people have nightmares with there will be a lot more who motor happily on for tens of thousands of miles with no dramas at all, never read a post that says "very happy, no problems, done 500k miles, just looking at what i typed could be because it hasn't happened yet

I get mine back from the garage tomorrow - just had new ignition switch and battery, bill £800 (lots of diagnostic labour as it just 'died' 3 weeks ago and the diagnostic bus was inoperative).

However, I wouldn't be without it, as WelshDragon said, if you buy a 60K car, you will get running / maintenance costs to match.

As the post above says however, we don't tend to post when everything is going well, only when we have a problem. (and who would read 'everything is going well' posts anyhow, most people find bad news more interesting - just look at the content of the daily newspapers or the TV news ).

This forum is great, you'll find all the problems you run into + the answers.
I bought my 2002 in the UK through this forum just on pics in the blind and found out that these are trustworthy people.
Done a year without trouble, bought a 2007 on lpg drives without trouble. So don't be scared, any car can let you down.
My 2002 has had previous forum owners and the right maintanance, it's a v8 petrol, 120k miles and you can try it if you want. To give you an idea how good these cars are.

Another newbie here although I've lurked for a long time and read up on stuff.

i bought my late father in laws TD6 earlier in the year after he passed away after a long illness.

He had owned it for 3 years so i knew the history which was a bonus and I've never looked back.

I have a bit of a slush fund should it go wrong but up to now everything is good and there is nothing else like an FF.

I've had powerful cars all my driving life and although the TD6 is not the most powerful, its the way it gets you there which is the nice thing. It has certainly changed my driving style for the better!!

I will defo be staying in a Range Rover for the foreseeable because where do you go after you've owned one?
