Rough Running TDV8 at idle

Hi

Drove 120 miles this morning, stopped for 20 mins, went back out and it sounded like a V8 petrol running on 6 pots
Went out a bit later and it was more like 4 pots with smokey exhaust

got home, lifted the bonnet and its fine

Any ideas
