Usually the only thing whining is the passenger but the engine has decided to chip in as well....

Don't know it myself, but sounds a bearing type of noise, so could be alternator as you surmise.

If it is alternator, a rebuild thread is here for a 7 series, though I'm not sure it's the same engine ;

Sounds like a bearing has failed, so in theory it can be stripped and the bearings replaced. So possibly doable for a few quids if you can get it out, and the outputs are still ok, personally wouldn't leave it too long as it would not be good if it seized. Worth a shot if they are as expensive as craig says, Marks link show they may be upto £800....... So worth a go. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
