Usually the only thing whining is the passenger but the engine has decided to chip in as well....

Don't know it myself, but sounds a bearing type of noise, so could be alternator as you surmise.

A sure fire way to tell would be to take the belt off the pulley, but knowing BMW, it prob runs elsewhere as well.

I did wonder about timing chain tensioner or guides, but still seems more like a bearing to me....

Can you do the old listening test with a screwdriver ?

Vanos noise tends to be at the front of the cam covers, at least on the S62 engined M5's which are similar.....

Does it change if you load up the alternator ?

sounds like alternator bearings or a belt tensioner to me, vanos (on the petrol engines at least) is more of a rattly noise. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Being watercooled it sits in the water jacket low down and not very visible, only the front face is poking out, I have a stethoscope but can't get to it when the engine is running as the belts in the way....

I'm pretty sure it is that as I've had it before on other motors, just thought with the wealth of knowledge on here someone might recognise the exact noise....

Doing a refurb on my daughters Yaris at the moment, she lives in Kent and I don't get to see it much, rebuilt the front calipers, new discs and pads, rears stripped and cleaned, new rad, new fanbelt, new sump (a victim of it's own success... it's never had an oil leak so the sump has rusted out!!!) full service, visit from the paintless dent removal guy and a full valet... So I'll dive under my bonnet when I've finished that lot......  Pete

Sounds like a bearing has failed, so in theory it can be stripped and the bearings replaced. So possibly doable for a few quids if you can get it out, and the outputs are still ok, personally wouldn't leave it too long as it would not be good if it seized. Worth a shot if they are as expensive as craig says, Marks link show they may be upto £800....... So worth a go. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Some on eBay used for less than a hundred quid.

Advanced Factors list one at £212 new, but no make listed. Steve is really helpful if you give him a call, if that's def the issue.....

Or Craig may be able to source one, and Dan at Duckworths can supply alternative parts to LR also.

But if it is the alternator stand by for a big bill! Ours failed last year and I think (fitted) it was around the £1200 mark. Our total bill for that visit to the LR dealer was over two grand because it decided that it didn't like its fuel pump either so spit that out as well! I think that was about £800!

Getting to the stage now where we can't sell it as mechanically almost everything is brand new!

Strangely, yours is the same colour as ours and about the same age! Ours I think is a 2003 on a '52' plate originally, now done 108K miles

Can get a rebuilt one with 1 year warranty for £160 so not too bad...

Paul, you maybe right, one of the cats does rattle first thing before it heats up so it could be that but I do think it sounds more like a bearing....
