Whining Noise 30-40mph

Hi,

The fun continues....

After a long motorway run recently I noticed that my 07MY TDV8 is making a whining noise between 30 and 40 mph. It only does it after it's warmed up briefly and it doesn't seem to get any worse. It seems to be coming from the rear of the car (I took the kids out to rule them out as the source....) and only occurs when the throttle is applied. There's no noise when coasting at this speed. The noise pulses and gets faster from 30-40 but then disappears altogether. The only similar noise I can hear is when I pull away I get a brief whine which disappears quite quickly. Oh and the car will tend to lurch out of junctions a bit, especially with lock on, but it's always done this and more throttle makes this go away.

I'm going to get the transfer case oil changed this week to see if this helps (clutching at straws but it needs doing anyway) but has anyone had something similar or does anyone have any ideas what it might be?

Sorry I don't know about tdv8 but my td6 has a whining noise which I think is the fuel pump. Just an idea as I don't know where it is on yours. Question

I reckon it's your alternator on way out potentially . It is exactly as you describe although slight doubt is you say it's from rear. Is noise present when you press accelerator when stationary? Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Thanks for the replies.

There's nothing when stationary and if I select neutral at 30-40mph then the noise goes away. It's only when the throttle is applied between these speeds (nearer to 40mph). My alternator was changed a few years ago so I'd hope it's not that, although it's possible.

Does it only happen when your partner is in the car in a 30mph limit? Thumbs Up no help at all but just a thought
