my car is an early 2002 with a poor man's spec ICE. It does have sat nav, but has the base speaker setup and no CD changer. My first goal is to retrofit it or at least have the possibility to plug an Intravee or similar.

I did some research but couldn't find the answer: is my car pre-wired for the CD Changer? And if yes, what connector should I espect to find once I dismantle the dash? What options are available? And, finally, in the case there's no wiring loom, which one should I buy in order to use it with a BMW CD changer?

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi there, if you have the wiring for a CD changer it will be behind the Glovebox, just above the inside fuses in the passenger side of you car. What you are looking for is either a 3 pin plug and a 6 pin plug OR a 10 pin plug.
Wire colours to look for,
3 pin plug
pin 1 Brown
pin 2 Green / Red
pin 3 White / Grey / Yellow

6 pin plug
pin 1 White / Green
pin 2 White / Brown
pin 3 Brown
pin 4 White / Red
pin 5 White / Brown
pin 6 No Wire

Or if it has the 10 pin plug,

pin 1 White / Green
pin 2 White / Brown
pin 3 Brown
pin 4 No Wire
pin 5 White / Grey / Yellow
pin 6 White / Red
pin 7 White / Brown
pin 8 Brown
pin 9 No Wire
pin 10 Green / Red

I would imagine that your car has the 3 and 6 pin plugs in it, and that any BMW 3+6 pin CD changer will fit. If you go down the Ipod route then 3+6 pin wiring is what you need! Then all you need to get is an interface that has the BMW trunk adaptor, BUT you do not need the extra long Aux leads, as the unit goes in the glove box and not the trunk (boot) as in a BMW. I ended up with about 5 meters too much when I fitted a Grom BT3 into my car, still I suppose that I have the option of having the Ipod in the boot

If you've got the 10 pin plug, then it will have to be a Range Rover CD changer. Only Range Rover had the 10 pin plugs , but on a lighter note I do have a CD changer with a 10 pin connection if needed

If your going down the Intravee / Grom / another, and you have the 10 pin plug, you will need to rewire, I went to great pains to find the correct pin / connection lists and posted them in here

All you have to do now is remove the Glovebox and hope that you have the loom in place, I would be very shocked if there are no wires at all, Good Luck  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Tomorrow I'm going to remove the whole dash because I'm taking the instrument cluster to a repair shop (guess why?), so we'll se if there's any loom, and which one. Fingers crossed!

So you have the screen connected to the TV module for its video feed and the gps unit.......

What is that blue connector I can see on top of the dash on the passenger side ?

I can see the speaker amp just at the side of the TV unit in the boot. That is where the feed from a cd should eventually feed to......

The cd will not feed directly to the screen. If that is what you were looking for.....

mjdronfield, by "speaker amp" you mean the box south of the TV one in the fourth picture? If yes, I'm going to check it tomorrow afternoon and see if there's anything. Hop it's just a normal bm54. BTW, I thought that the CD wire ran from the display.

As for the blue connector, it's one of the three that go into the instrument cluster. The car is a LHD (I'm in Italy).

The screen does nothing in real terms. Everything feeds to the boot area. The video feed daisy chains from the TV and gps units to the front of the car.

Yes, the BMxx whatever you have, not sure, if you don't have a high line ice system..... Is generally referred to as the radio unit, but it also houses the amp, so can get confusing. The speaker connections are there. All the sources feed to it on the loom.

It's lower in the boot, as you can see. You will have to remove some of the trim to get to it properly......

Tomorrow I'm going to disassemble everything. Just one last question: where is the CD changer plug in the BM5x supposed to be?

EDIT: I mean... I know that I should find it in the glove box, but 1) there's already enough mess in the front of my car because of the dash disassembly, and 2) I want to know more about the setup. Also... since my glove box is not configured to take a CD changer without... Changing the box trim, and since there's enough space in the trunk, nothing stops me from putting the changer (or whatever I decide to install) in the trunk. Am I wrong?

I don't know what they do with the lead if the cd is not fitted, but the correct connections can be seen on the diagram below. The right hand side part is the correct one.

I can't see any reason why you can't put the cd in the boot...... Poss where it is in a few BMW models, so if you can manage to get a loom from one of those to connect to the radio, it will save the loom being 16 foot too long.....

There is a post here about someone trying to find the leads in an X5 if that helps. Was covered in sponge type stuff and wrapped up in the loom.....

Hello Peeps, well I can see the TV tuner module, and the radio head (BM54), but I can see any power amp, it would appear to have one box less than mine How does it make a noise?
If the CD changer loom is present it WILL be above the fusebox behind the glovebox, I will have a dig around in the papers that I collected when fitting my Grom unit to try and work out where the loom goes to in the boot. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

These should give you some help, the first is a slightly better version of the second. You'll need to look at the big plug on the radio head to see if there are the connections for a cd, if there are it will be on the A plug, and the wires that your looking for are-
pin 2 white / brown
pin 8 white / red
pin 9 white / blue

If you've got them then the other end should end up at the glovebox!





Just Noticed thtat the colours are the BMW ones, L/R use white / brown , white / red, and white / green!
