Some insight (and some questions) about speaker wiring

Hello chaps,

after some PM-ing with miggit, today I got to disassemble the driver-side (LHD) door car of my FF in order to see if there was any tweeter plug.

The reason has its story: my FF is a HSE (AKA "half speakers equipment", as miggit said Mr. Green ), so it has a basic audio setup consisting in the BM54 (in my case with satnav and analog TV) and six speakers. Four of them are midbasses (each per door), and two (in the front doors) are mid-highs. The car is missing the mid-highs enclosures in the rear door cars, but retains the ones for the front door tweeters and central dash speakers.

So far for a complete picture of the starting point. Sound quality is, as you all know, s Censored t to be kind, so I started tinkering with the idea of giving it a bit of improvement without ripping off the car and my wallet.

Seen that shipping my BM54 to Carphonics would prove too long and too dear for a low-budget project, I found this on the fleabay:

http://www.ebay.it/itm/Becker-BM54-radio-m...1c4a048281

Available to all EU territory, it seems to get positive feedback. The kit arrived in six days, seems to be up to my soldering and cutting skills, and very well made. Will mount it tomorrow.

Provided it all goes well (touch wood and fingers crossed), the second stage of my improvement plan was adding front tweeters using the existing empty enclosures.

After a lot of guesswork with miggit, we figured out that "Ze GermanZ" wouldn't have been so stupid to use different wiring patterns for the three sound systems (base, HI-FI and H/K): it would have costed too much... better have one identical loom and add/remove speakers. This guess had its reasons because there already is a CD-Changer wiring for the cars that are not equipped with it (as mine).

The only way to discover if our guesswork was correct was to dismantle a door card, so today I did it and...

YEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAHHHH!!! Thumbs Up

Look at that: a wonderful blue-ish BMW speaker female plug! (along with a third connector that seems to be folding-mirror-or-memory-related)

What does all of this mean?

Well:

1) I can plug the tweeters with no hassle;

2) 90% chance that crossovers/filters are already there, and no reason to think that each of the three sound systems shares the same crossovers;

3) with point 2 in mind, easy swap of HK

4) more than that, easy install of BMW stuff, like www.bavsound.com or similar.

To be fair, I didn' bother exploring the centre dash enclosure, but I wouldn't be surprised...

AFAIK there aren't any crossovers, the amp does all the work... have you found the other end of the speaker wire in the door?? Pete

No Pete, didn't bother. Either because 1) if there were any crossovers, I would stick with them and their original frequency split, or 2) if, as you say, all is done by the amp, then no need to think about it.

By the way, I'm not sure that filtering is done by the BM54 amp. If things were like that, there should be one single exit for each single speaker. Since the BM54 plug, IIRC, doesn't seem to be done ina way that suggests the presence of 6/8/11/12 sparate wirings for speakers (but I may be wrong on that), I'm inclined to think that a some point, hidden in the door card, there must be some little filter of some sort. Didn't check because I was in a hurry, and because the presence of the pre-wiring led me to think that everything was already there. Roberto

Thanks for the pictures Pete. Thumbs Up
This means that I don't have to bother about hidden crossovers. I just need do decide what kind of BMW/LR (either factory or aftermarket plug&play) speaker I want to plug into the existing female connectors. Nice! Roberto

Just slightly off topic.
There must be differing builds for different countries, or what the new purchaser specifies.
Our vehicle is an HSE with satnav and analogue tv, but the speaker arrangement is different to yours.
It has the tweeters in the front doors and mid highs for the rear doors. There is no sub enclosure to the rear. Either this was not specified in the customer build, or is not available for the HSE.
I can't find the printout build sheet at the moment which might give more info regarding other items relating to the audio.

Just had a look on Rave, there is European, European Export and NAS (North American Spec) All of them show the two levels of sound system as above, all identical....

Must be variations in options though.... Pete

Ive resisted the temptation to post as I'm not 100% sure how the non DSP systems hang together.....

Here are the options for the UK spec cars

The six speaker system is not active I recon. Looks like you have the 6 speaker audio with the TV and Nav as an option fitted.

The nav option etc necessitate the bm54 fitment, which is just a 4 channel amp.

Obviously the proof of the pudding will be in the eating, as it were, but as you can see on the wiring diagrams, the tweeters are fed through their own channel, so you may have to do a bit or rewiring in the boot on the other end of the tweeter leads....

There is no reason why you can't plug some tweeters in the socket and see if you get sounds.

Would be nice to know how it hangs together when you find out.

Ironhorse, that's an Amp which will have the crossovers built in, or something like that, I can't see it too clearly as I have a pretty awful screen...!!!

Mark, was wondering where you were.... is that an Amp on Ironhorse's pic, looks different to the DSP one.... Pete

Here is the wiring diagram for the six speaker system, which would normally be fed from the head unit in the dash rather than an amp in the boot......

You must have a bit of a mix across the options......

Can't see them deviating that much though.....even across various markets....

If iron horse has uk spec it will have the dsp standard as its a Vogue. That said, mine is not mounted there either, I've got my ULF there. It will be an active system with the unit feeding the speakers and containing the crossovers.

I think there may be a couple of variations of layout in the boot, as that's not the first one I've seen like that.

Without having a good look it's hard to be sure.

If we can get a part number from it, Google will confirm..... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
