Thought I would ask what's your worst accident at work or on holiday etc.
On Monday I slipped with pliers and punches my face with them and it went straight in my eyeball splitting it apart. After spending the night in hospital and an operation to get it stiched back together I'm now starting to feel ok again. The nhs is in a poor state as I had to wait nearly 4.5hrs just to be seen at a/e. Then when I went into hospital there was no beds left so I was put in a 5th bed just in the middle of a ward for 4, but the nhs still done a great job but they are just over stretched

the NHS is a godsend compared to other countries!!!!


my wife got an appointment, to see a consultant after 1 year

the last consultant, all he was interested in was money, didnt ask any medical quations just said "so do you want the op"!!!!

I fully appreciate the nhs. What I don't appreciate is people going to a/e when they could just go to there local gp.

I am going in for an operation on Monday and expect to be in for 2 - 4 days.
With the pre-op's, consultations and the operation, in the USA it would cost in excess of $20,000.
I will have used it twice for operations, the first time when I was 5, to have my appendix out. I am now 57 and about to use it again.
The NHS is the best in the world in all ways, cost per head of population, etc.
Like anything else, people only hear the bad things about anything, never the praise.
I can't praise it enough.

Sorry to hear about your accident hope you are on the mend.
The NHS can be brilliant some times and poor in others there is a lot of luck involved. yes private very quick and I am very luck to have it with my employment but it should be like that for all, The problems with the NHS are from poor management to unnecessary paperwork and out of date practice's are entire debate on it's own! thats my 10p's worth Mine was a blue one!

Around six, maybe seven, years ago I was on a business trip for a kick-off meeting.

Whilst showering one morning, I slipped and fell backwards against the bath and 'bounced' off the bath side on my ribs. It winded me, left a huge dent in my side for about 5 minutes and hurt rather a lot.

Anyway, I got out eventually and got dressed and made it down for breakfast in some degree of pain. Just bruising, I thought.

So I had a day of meetings and the pain got worse and I found it hard to sit down and stand up. But I managed. Then onward to my flight home on a turboprop. The latter saved me. A pressurised cabin, so I'm told, could have killed me.

And then into work the next day. By this time, my wee was red with blood and I had a 'few' bruises showing. Many told me I 'looked like ****'.

I drove home, went to bed and couldn't get up the next morning. My wife decided that was enough and got me to the local doctor. As I thought, he said it was just bruising. There! Told you!

But I handed him a sample of my dark red wee and that was it. Rushed to hospital. X-rays, CAT-scans, morpheine. My 5 year-old son saw me in hospital and the first thing he asked was 'Daddy, are you going to die?'

Turns out it was more than bruising. I'd completely snapped two ribs which punctured and filled my left lung with blood. The impact had damaged my spleen and liver and kidneys, hence the blood in my wee.

So, hospital for two days and off work for two weeks. In truth, it should have been more but I didn't listen. I couldn't sleep horizontally for over two months, so 'slept ' in the spare room propped up with cushions.

I went back to work. I drove my 110 as the seats in that were flatter on the back than our E-Class and hurt my tender ribs less. Clare was livid with me for ignoring her on that. Work utterly exhausted me and I'd get home and sleep.

On getting back to work, this being an LNG project, I was told off as the accident nearly cost the project the loss of their 14,000,000 man hours without an injury. But as I wasn't strictly 'at work' but in a hotel room, they waived that one. I was told off for not contacting their medical emergency helpline and for getting on a plane without being checked-out. But at the time, I genuinely had no idea how serious it was and just wanted to get home.

The NHS were great, although I'll never ever forget the sheer pain caused by the X-ray person who moved me around with such a lack of sympathy to get the shots needed that I was screaming out at times. Turns out they couldn't get any shots as the air bubbles in my lungs, combined with the blood, completely hid any clarity, hence the CAT-scans after that.

Ribs still hurt now on a damp day. Si. <This is my name.

Our version of the NHS is constantly battling the same issues.

Big news story last week: Younge, pregnant Canadian woman and her husband went to Hawaii on vacation. They had travel medical insurance and she'd been cleared to fly by her doctor. While in Hawaii, her water broke and she ended up in hospital on bed rest for six weeks. (No air ambulance would fly her home.) After the six weeks, the little sprog put in an appearance, but needed to stay in intensive care for another six weeks. Family now back home in Canada. Cost of bill, ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Insurance company is trying to weasel out of paying, saying pregnancy is preexisting.

About 10 years or so I was working on my LandRover outside in February, cold but dry, it was a complete chassis rebuild and was nearing the end doing the dash board panels.
My Mrs had come home from work at about 5 pm ish when I was drilling small holes in alli sheet with a 3mm drill bit. Now I was rushing to finish the section I was on and wanted to help put dinner on when SNAP the bit snapped and the drill went into my thumb nail.....ouch.
After a few choice words the Mrs said hospital and after an xray all was good....but the thumb went septic after a few days. Now after the mrs pinned me down looking at the thumb, I had a chard of thumb nail pushed under the growing nail hence it was going bad xray wont of seen that! the nail was a bit of a mess mind.


NOW go on 12 months but a week when fitting a new winch to the LandRover I had to cut the plastic grill for it to fit over the winch motor ( warn 8274), yes at about the same time 5pm when the mrs came home, I was hack sawing a small section off on the work bench outside when ( now rushing again ) the flippin hack saw blade went into the same fn thumb nail and cutting the thumb aswell, blood everywhere.

Now the shock and the cold ( it was freezing when doing this job ) equals..................................................................hit the deck and wake up on the sofa!  If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!
