Funnily enough... I emptied my ashtray in my "outgoing" FF of £1 coins and only then worked out that £1 coins are not magnetic!!!

The steel pennies were a cost saving, as they predicted that they would become worth more in copper scrap than their face value! Like old silver florins. & gold sovereigns!

thrupenny bits were bronze / brass weren't they? I think you meant the silver sixpence, bit bigger that an easily lost modern 5 pence piece! And funnerly enough made of silver until the late 40's, I think, I'm not really old enough to know that one, I was only 5 years and 4 days old when we went decimal. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
