This is how the tachometer works but I'm afraid I wouldn't know how to trace faults other than bad connections.

I would hazard a guess that possibly the cluster is at fault if the whole caboodle is driven by the crank position sensor. If that was faulty then the engine just wouldn't run. Just an idea.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
