Stray rubber hose under bonnet. What is it for?

I noticed an open ended black rubber tube in the engine bay. (similar in diameter to fuel pipe etc.) I followed it down and it disappears somewhere underneath the oil filter area, so not sure where it actually goes. Any idea what it is for (breather? drain tube?). Should it be open ended or attached to something? (Red arrow on photo shows where it goes)

There is a vent from the washer bottle down there somewhere, the other end should be clipped to the top of the washer bottle neck... Pete

^ nope that comes out under the car

Could be a breather for the diffs or gearbox. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
