Sorry that is not quite correct. If you wear contact lenses then you are recommended to have a spare pair of glasses. There is no requirement to have a spare pair of glasses whether you wear glasses or contact lenses. It would be sensible to have a spare pair as, if the requirement for vision correction is included in your licence, then you cannot legally drive if you damage or lose your glasses/contact lenses.

There may be some confusion as originally it was a requirement for contact lens wearers to have a spare pair of glasses but that has since been rescinded. John

I'm off to France in May, using the tunnel. Looking at the height of the FF can we use the normal car lanes or do we have to use the over height lane.

use the 'high car, over 1.85m' lane... ... - .- -.

Make sure you buy the over height ticket though as they won't let you in the lane with a normal ticket, also if you have bought a high ticket don't let them bully you onto the normal coaches as almost happened to me.

Went something like this, stopped me by the barrier to the lanes,

Him - "You can go in this one"
Me - "no thanks, it doesn't fit very well"
Him - "it does fit"
Me - "I have a high ticket"
Him - "so, I'm telling you to go this way"
Me - "tuff"
Him - "control won't let you through"
Me -"wanna bet"
Him - "try it then"

Drive off. Man lets me through no problems, after all I have the right bleeding ticket. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

There are pro's & cons of each

Over height is the same price as regular, but there is less availability - so if there are any delays, you can often be impacted more if you're over height.

Over height is also wider as well as higher - so easier to drive through. The loading entrance is also significantly bigger - it's designed for coaches.

A FFRR will fit comfortably in regular height, but you need to lower the suspension to get under the 1.85m barrier after passport checks - at least you of with a 2005-2009 antenna The train itself has more head room, but I leave mine lowered. Width wise is also tight, I fold my mirrors to pass the toilets - in over height the toilets are at the end - in regular, they are at the side, so you squeeze past them.

If you're in any way nervous about the size of the FFRR go over height - if you're confident you know it well and would be happy in a multi storey car park, then you should be OK in regular height.

Except when I've got skis on the roof, I now go in regular - after many years of always booking over height - but that's because I always go flexi-plus these days - and if you go in regular height, there is a separate 'terminal' building with nicer toilets and free food

If you've never tried Flexi - its great - separate lane at check in, bypass the terminal & go straight to passport control, quick stop for a bag of food & guaranteed first on to the next train - it saves me loads of time. You can use it over height too - you just miss the food. They are a bit steep one off, but I do 5 return trips a year, so I buy a pack that works out at £127 each way. Fantastic on peak days which is when I usually travel - or when there are delays

I always go for the normal car deck, where if you drop to access height you have no trouble. Coming back on my last trip all the RRs, discos jeeps etc were ushered into the high clearance areas. I shared a carriage with a grand Cherokee and a couple of discos. Needless to say the Land Rover owners all chatted amongst themselves, whilst the jeep people stayed in their car reading. Wonder why.......
