Whining noise from engine or transmission when cold

I have noticed a whining noise from the engine or transmission when the car is cold for the first few miles. It seems to be at low speed and particularly when backing off the throttle as the car slows under engine braking.

Any ideas from anyone? It is going in for a service in a couple of weeks anyway but it would be good to have some idea what it is beforehand or if anyone has noticed anything similar.

In the L322 5.0 SC the supercharger whines at low speeds when cold but once warmed up you hardly ever hear it.... Discovery 4 HSE

Yes, my first thought was that it sounded like a supercharger whine. I can't remember my 2010 making the same noise when cold but it may have done.

You may find with miles the supercharger is bedding in/loosening up? Just my best guess... That or a diff issue starting?
