Replace Roof Lining

Hi guys,

As usual I bow to your expert knowledge of all things Range Rover and have another question for you and would appreciate any advise, suggestion and warnings!!

I have a 2008 Range Rover vogue and I have been offered an Autobiography leather roof lining from a 2010 Range Rover. Firstly, I assume that there is no difference between the size of the roof linings and it will just be a straight swop?

I was wondering if any one had removed and refitted a new roof lining? If so how difficult was it? Is there anything I should be wary of?

As usual, thanks in advance.

Look at 3:27

It won't be an identical process but you'll be looking at something similar I'd expect - Assuming they both have the same holes that is. Dan

i did a change on a RR classic a few years ago now. the thing you have to do, is do it where the roof lining already is, as you cant realistically move it in your car. and if its a dirty place, then you are very likely (at least with a fabric one, to get it dirty. and if its hot you will struggle (like i did!) if its windy, dont do it! you would be better having an assistant too. if your old one is good, it will sell. but they are hard to transport away!

on the new headlining, check that your roof consoles will fit before you go ahead! do the AB ones have extra mirror flaps etc?

I took mine out a couple of weeks back and recovered it, mine is a 2003 hse without sunroof. No dramas at all. On the front screen pillar trims you need to pop out the SRS badge to expose a screw, the front console light has two screws, the rear pops out to expose two screws under it. The rest is all visible to remove. The headshell then comes out from the rear.

Come for a ride in mine Stan. I notice the leather (and admire it wistfully) every time I get in. I only notice though because it's because it's so nice I think, but definitely worth the effort IMHO.

What material did you use? I'm currently doing mine and have gotten as far as removing the headlining, stripping the old material and removing all the old foam backing / adhesive that was left behind. I bought some nova suede type material that has zero give or stretch so my plan was to buy genuine alcantara in charcoal (near black)

That will be the final piece in a very very long colour change project.

Using leather for the headlining does seem a bit extravagant. I mean don't get me wrong i like leather but you get much cheaper vinyls that look the same, they don't normally feel the same, but seeing as head lining isn't really something you touch and feel.

I've not removed one from a range Rover but i've done it on a few other cars.

There are basically two types, older designs are suspended by metal hoops that clip into the cant rail on either side of the roof then the fabric edges are clamped by the rubber seals and side trims.

I would imagine the L322 uses the later type though, where the fabric is stuck over a rigid board, normally with a later of foam to plump it up provide more insulation.. These are pretty easy, Pull the rubber seal/trim off the sunroof aperture, unscrew all the grab handles, and sun visors, then remove all the side pillar trims, roof consoles, lights etc and the whole thing just drops down. It's well worth having an assistant, especially when refitting the new one as you'll want someone to pass it into you while you're in the car and support it until you can get the first few things like the roof consoles back in to hold it up.

Thanks Guys,

Thanks Johnboyairey and Wayneg - very useful information thanks.

Stan - I bet you would notice the headlining if yours wasn't nice leather!

SteveyD - I have an autobiography headlining which is leather already, so I am not covering myself.

It would seem that this is a modification worth doing. I cant wait to get started !!!!

I picked up my cloth from ebay in Oz. The cloth is better than original but looks the same and a perfect match. Its a sandwhich of a backing sheet, foam then the facing material, 3mtrs cost $50. I was looking at elastic micro suede as an option for a similar cost from Aliexpress.

Please let me know if it fits or not.

Best regards,
