Diagnostic Devices

I am looking to purchase a diagnostic device for my R/R L322 2005. A friend of mine plugged in a Maxiscan MS309 yesterday and the device found the VIN code of the vehicle. Does this mean that the Maxiscan will work on my L322. Any help please.

get an iidtool from GAP...

I would expect so yes, but it might simply read fault codes for Basic engine faults, emissions and safety systems and do little else.
