I just got back from France & trying out my new telepeage gadget & it works like a dream

Anyone who has driven down the toll roads will most likely have experienced some level of queueing and in the peak seasons it can be quite considerable.

The telepeage box allows you to use dedicated lanes with an orange t above them and there is no need to stop, you just roll up to the barrier, the box beeps and the barrier raises It's so quick I started to look forward to the toll stations.

I got mine from APRR who seem to be the only company who would bill to a UK credit card, all the rest wanted a french bank account.

Cost me 10 Euros for the box & there is an admin fee of 2 Euros for every calendar month that I use it - charges go direct to my credit card & I pay nothing for months I don't use it - simples

In case it's not obvious, I thoroughly reccomend it......

Snap - we just drove through France using the APRR RFID unit - although I wasn't sure if it would work through the heated screen, but it worked really well (even on the non stop 30kph lanes) mounted on the glass behind the rear view mirror.

I was towing a boat this time (with a wakeboard tower) that was over 2m high so I couldn't use the fast lanes, but there were still some dedicated telepeage only lanes at some stations and even others were way quicker.

The not having to stop to take a ticket helped too.

I'm driving down on my own on Friday & not towing, so that's where it will be a real advantage - not having to get out and run round every time.

I can see the merrits... and we travel all the way to the south... but its going to make about 10 minutes difference on a days driving I have enough sport figuing out which lanes I can get the Caravan through  2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

Are these transferable between vehicles? I.E. Does it need to be registered to one vehicle or just a credit card and is valid for any car with it on board?

Valid for any car - You can transfer between vehicles, but not on the same trip, you can't pass back to the car behind you, but you can use in a different car on a different trip.

How much time difference is moot - I've queued for over 20 minutes on a peak day before now at a single toll booth.

It doesn't save that much time in the middle of the night - as long as your passenger is awake (if you have a passenger). During the day, especially during French holidays in August, it has saved lots of time (10-15 minutes or more at some toll booths).

But it does save lots of hassle, especially when you are able to use the 30kph "straight through lane".

If you ever break down however it is worth putting the unit inside a tin can (or foil bag) to prevent you from being charged from the back of a tow truck ...

Now yes you have a good point re the LHD V RHD issue... and I'd not thought of the potential to be billed on the back of a tow truck... BTDTGTTS.

What's the best position for the tag as I'm told that the heated screen can interfere with auto detection?

As said above, behind the rear view mirror is the best place.

I use ALIS (have done for some years) http://alis-sa.com/index-gb.php . There has been no additional charge for use but they are being taken over by Easytrip and the cost from next year will be an additional €1 for any month in which it is used.

There are also concessions on the A28 for"badge" (French description of the transponder) users.

Be aware that none of the transponders are valid for some of the tunnels through the Alps. They are valid for some in town car parks. John

Heated screen doesn't seem to affect it, use min in both the FFRR and the disco, both with heated screens with no problems at all.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Had a sanef tag for about 3 years, no issues at all re heated screens. Fix in the shaded area below rear view mirror. So much easier than queuing, especially if driving solo or through the night when your passengers don't like being woken to get the ticket or pay the man in the booth. Pay by DD about a month after your trip. Definitely worth it IMHO.

A very useful post Alistair. I'm off to France tomorrow and completely forgot about these things. I'll probably get one for the next trip in Oct only because I hate queuing. Ta for the info.

They are great - I've skipped some significant queues, though most of the time it's just nice for the lack of hassle and my wife can stay asleep.
