If it has to be a pickup the ford ranger looks ok

I had a mate who had a ford ranger on about a 07 plate as I recall
He said it was very light on the rear end unladen almost to a point of being scary sometimes.
Maybe something to consider in your choice of vehicle

And a snugg top for the back. It makes it 100% more practical. As you can leave stuff in it when you park up, not expensive stuff mind, but stops you worrying that there is no protection at all.

We have 2 and the black invincible had been bulletproof, while the silver hl3 has been problematic. The rear diff has had to be rebuilt but it looks like it had been out before for some problem before we had it. Very truck like to drive and not at all luxurious but in the end function over form, and the invincible looks very "tonka toy".

Beware of ex fleet cars though as they can reck up serious miles and may have been "adjusted" before they went back to the provider. I pretty sure that is what happened to our silver one, only showing 91k now but feels older! The 90k invincible feels fresher but that could be because it's an auto. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I've got a 90 hard top which does me for 90% of the "mucky" needs I have and if I need more space I either put a trailer on the back or use roof bars

In my experience working on site in some fairly 'naughty' locations.. the Hilux is king.

However, a host of builder/landscape/caravan/surveyor mates all seem to be going for the VW Amarok. They tell me it's larger, feels well built and the twin turbo 2.0L diesel is a great engine...

They have commented that they never understand ppl who buy them as their first car as they are commercial's but the VW feels more car like to drive and has a very VW dash. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

There is only one pickup, shame they're LHD only....

From this side of the pond, the idea of a pick up truck with a 2L engine is hilarious. (See second above.)
While I'm sure it works well and gives reasonably good economy, it would never be accepted over here. Here, everyone seems to need engines with about the same displacement as those in the average cruise ship. A relative has one with a 6.5 L diesel. He's jealous of the mileage my Disco 1 V8 gets!
And no, we don't get Defenders, Armoks or Hiluxes here.

Why not just go out and get a cheap £1k hilux double cab and use that as the hack it is. When you come to sell as long as its not totally rotted out it should be worth pretty much the same. Youve then not lost any money on it.
When you throw stuff in it for the tip you dont need to worry about scratching the load bed or sides and stuff.

And when on the school run a kiddy drops a sweet or something you can just leave it on the foor and let the dog find it later, and ooo dog hairs! no worries with them.

Like a long term hire car that costs you nothing. No need to wash it or do anything but basic services and if it ever costs more than £200 at MOT time stick it on ebay and get the next one.

Depreciation? Resale worries? massive bills for a not too old car? PFFT SOD THAT!

I have a daily hack, costs me 65p/litre to fill it, is worth more than I bought it for(not hard really!) and I can fit things upto 3ish metres in or upto 3 cubic metres of crud and can take around a tonne in weight in the back if I really wanted to push it.

But he's wrong. If you're going to buy an old pickup, then nothing is better than an old 60's / 70's Ford F150. Classic motoring, wonderful V8 soundtrack, loads of room for the ankle biters up front, cheap insurance and parts and also zero depreciation.
