Is there any way of testing the headlight levelling ecu without the use of something like the GAP IID tool? Mine is a 2002 TD6 Vogue. The problem I have is that the headlights do a great job of lighting up bridges and first floor windows but are something of an embarrassment with regards to fellow road users. Mine has the Xenon lamps and the ecu in the passenger footwell. I've looked in the manual and also read some of the posts on here, particularly about using the tourist button but I want to fix it properly - just looking for some guidance as to where to start.

From what you describe I think you need to set the direction of the headlights manually to bring the level of each down.
Probably best done at a local garage which has beam setting equipment, possibly a garage that carries out MOT's.
The headlight level ECU controls the height each of the headlights by use of a small motor attached to each headlight, the intention being to vary the height of each headlight to cater for undulations in the road surface as you drive along. The system never worked correctly which is why it was discontinued by LR on earlier cars.
The variation in height of the beams produced by the ECU is nominal, if it is still working on your car, and if adjusted will not cater for the apparent out of alignment of your headlights as described by you.

@nicedayforit - thanks for the reply, will have a look at setting them manually. As the (headlight levelling) ecu only makes minor adjustments can it be simply unplugged or would that make the main LCM (light check module) throw a wobbly

It could create a fault with the LCM yes, but... 99.5% of systems don’t work from factory on pre 05 cars anyhow! So as suggested above, it sounds like your lights are simply poorly adjusted sir...

As above, I would be inclined to do nothing as regards the ecu, chances are the self leveling is not working anyway.
Having the beams set correctly should give you the outcome you want.
