Is a 5.0 better on fuel than the previous 4.2 sc ?

Been looking at 5.0 models as they come fully loaded which I love, I previously owned a 4.2 sc and found it pretty dire on fuel to be honest. Now I know the 5.0 is even bigger engine obviously but wondered as its a more modern engine if it would be any better on fuel? Or am I just hoping! What do you guys get mpg wise?

I reckon side by side the 5.0 is probably marginally better on fuel than the 4.2. But and the big but! Is that the 5.0 is so good that you cannot help but enjoy it and drive it accordingly so there is probably not much in it.

I would say if anything less than 12 MPG bothers you then look for someone else. Life is after all for living and for those of us lucky enough to be here in 10 years time then a V8 will be nothing more than an MP3 sound track. The phrase "enjoy it whilst you still can" has never been more key. Mainstream thumping V8s will be nothing more than a fond memory and we will soon be choosing our (hybrid) cars in a similar way to how we buy fridge freezers and washing machines.

Hi I average 16 to 17 that's more town work than motorway 4.2 sc The worst thing about being retired is you miss out on all the bank holidays

Direct injection is going to bring a fair improvement but is probably wiped out by the 20% increase in swept volume so ignoring official figures like you have to these days it's much a muchness , The old engineers adage " to make the power you need to use the fuel " so 4.2L v 5L = 400 hp v 500 hp is roughly 12.5% increase in efficiency v 20% increase in capacity = sod all difference in the real world . 2008 MY Supercharged

Yes I think I will stick with the 4.4 tdv8 idea then, just thought if the purchase of the 5.0 originally was cheaper then it would be possibly worth it, saying that though I think the additional fuel costs would soon outweigh this.

Based on what my fuel card bill is each month I seem to average about 21 in a 5.0. Very significantly less (14 ish) when we've been away with the caravan Laughing

But then, I don't care about the cost of fuel, I drive what I want. Never had a 4.2 FFRR but have had several XJRs & XKRs and SWMBO used to have a S Type R with that same engine. All much of a muchness in terms of fuel usage.

Interestingly when I had the XFR for a while that was doing high 20's / early 30's overall but it was so damn lary I was never comfortable really opening the taps so I drove it much more conservatively than I would have liked (Lack of ability really) and hence why it didn't last long. I'm an OK driver but don't have the lightning fast reactions needed to drive that thing well. It's mental.

The point being......erm I dunno really. It's thirsty, but lovely to drive in the FFRR. I'd have the 5.0 every time.

are you looking at a certain price range of FF or age range?

IMO if it was me and i had £30k bulging my pockets instead of a Bratwurst, i'd go for the SC as there have already been one major design recall/TSB for the 4.4 which doesn't inspire confidence for me, added to that you have 2 turbos, 2 EGR's, 2 EGR Coolers, more boost pipes and sensors....
The SC will be the cheaper one to maintain long term IMO as long as it is maintained to the LR standard or better ideally and fluids in diffs and such are not left in for life. And supercharge oil service as well Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

It woke be around that figure, maybe a bit more. 10 plate onwards. The spec is important to me and obviously the sc model comes fully loaded where not all 4.4s do.
