The last 15 mins of a 5.5hr trek up the M6 car park proved eventful yesterday.
My 4.2sc has had a rasping noise when given some welly for a few weeks now but last night I got the dreaded bong, the rasping stopped and the reduced engine output message appeared.

The engine was still running and whilst I could maintain motorway speed I'd lost all the usual acceleration.

So any ideas?
Is it the supercharger given up the ghost (any guide price on a replace or repair)
Would it still be safe to drive? (I'm 200 miles from home and guess when my auto cover runs out)

Our SC lost power on the motorway last year and the REP warning activated/ reset itself after turning the engine on and off.

Main dealer plugged the diagnostic tool into the car and the reason for the reduced engine performance was because the water pump (connected to the supercharger I think/ mechanic said it was a known issue on the SC) had failed. They replaced the water pump under warranty.

ps.. I can't comment on the rasping although as above the water pump appears to be an associated component to the supercharger, if I was correctly informed.

Why did you run it for a few weeks with a strange noise??? It can't tell you any better that it has something wrong with it...!!!!

You have probably done the damage now, but personally I wouldn't drive it, wouldn't take much else to break to cost well in excess of the towing fee....

If your car makes an unusual noise get it checked.... Could have been a £5 bearing going, two weeks later and you have wrecked the whole supercharger....

I hope for you sake it's just a burst hose or similar.... Pete

It COULD be unrelated, and that the exhaust has an issue, possibly a manifold gasket, and the water pump (separately) is now showing itself. But Pete has a point. If it's making a noise, or spitting out it juices, stop! Get advice. Just waiting for a bong is not the best route.
We are always wiser after the event.
