Canal cruiser/Narrowboat
Hello team has anybody had any experience of Canal cruisers/narrowboats possibly as a liveaboard?

Cold in the winter, hot in the summer, damp and very wet when you come back from the pub and miss the gangplank, sounds like fun

Only so far as one of my old Brickie lived on one!

Sounded quaint...... If a little chilly in the winter, but I suppose that depends on how well it's insulated. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Caravans without wheels!
I work near a marina and the local pub is full of people that live on them.
They (the people that live on the ) boats) all shapes and sizes and seem to enjoy it winter or summer. From what I hear it is a very cheap way to live.

There OK if your narrow boat sized... my mates got one and I walk around bent double.... as said above they do always moor near pubs so it does have advantages...  Pete

We have rented a few for holidays and loved them so much that we seriously considered buying one.

The purchase of a good boat isn't the problem. It's finding a good, permanent mooring that's the issue, or was when we were looking. Decent places, like property locations, come at a price. Plus there's craneage fees for yearly descaling and anti-fouling treatment.

We pursued it no further than that, but would still like to buy one.

However, the sheer relaxation when pottering about on the canals and the scenery, not to mention the mooring spots next to pubs, is pure delight. It's a fantastic way to see the very best of the countryside and, often, cities. Si. <This is my name.

They are excellent for making you ask the question "what can I live without" as storage is obviously an issue.

Great for decluttering your life. It just depends on how much a minimalist person you can be. Would suit me but not SWMBO. Howard

We live near the Grand Union and there are some very swish modern looking wide body canal boats about that look huge inside and very trendy. However like Motorhomes you will never be able to flush the loo and leave it to somebody else to get rid of, and water tanks tanks need a regular refill.

Its a charming idea spoilt slightly by the littering louts that live in some of the less salubrious boats.

I made enquiries about 25 years ago for berthing costs on the Clyde coast (not narrowboats) for a 36" yacht and my mortgage was less expensive

Mooring fees are very reasonable where I am looking or I could move every couple of weeks between Stoke, Macclesfield and Whaley Bridge as it's the same distance to work.
Would like a widerbodied boat like your photos Gaz but the Macc Canal is a very narrow one.
Just running through options to speed up my retirement. Mine was a blue one!

Stoves if you can get free wood from somewhere and have some space to store a good weeks worth, some webasto/Eberspächer units come in handy if you can get heating oil delivered to one instead of normal read(a good bit cheaper heating oil is i believe) Insulation again is paramount and making sure that you have two bilge pumps incase one fails in the middle of the night is an idea. Seems to be a more common way to live in bigger cities than it used to be.

To be fair the old units that power them are generaly old Lister/Petter engines which can run off old veg oil thats been filtered. they are noisy without a good exhaust though but can be made quite quiet and vibrations dampened if you spend the time to do it right.

Depending on the area its moored will depend on how much stuff can be stuck on top or outside as well. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
