Replacing battery

I have tried searching but failed to find an answer, forgive me if it is under my nose.
My experience of batterys is they rarely last much after 5 years and as mine has now passed that I choose to replace it at my convenienc rather than inconvenience.
I am aware there is a set procedure that must be rigourously followed but do not have it laid out, is there a step by step guide?
Should I replace it with a genuine part or a premium battery like Oddesy? letters not necessarily in the right order
