so can I assume that there is no way an iPhone can be connected (other than via blue tooth) which does not allow your contacts etc to be accessed on the head u

Basically no the only option is bluetooth.

However mine works perfectly with syncing the contacts and being able to scroll through the contacts from the head unit. If yours doesn't then you probably just need a software update on your bluetooth unit.
