United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Santorini Black
Theiving little *****

Woke up this morning and someone has pinched the plates off my old mans Hilux. He had just had a private one put on so attracted a bit more attention I suppose! Probably pinched for a drive off fuel station job!

Anyhow reported it to the police so if it is used in some nefarious deed then we have done the right thing! It is now parked up off the road awaiting some new plates and anti theft screws..... Does anyone have any top tips on how to stop it happening again!! Apart from electrification of the bodywork. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi there -

More than likely they will go onto an identical, meaning his vehicle may recieve some positive attention due to ANPR cameras.
I'd advise him to carry his V5 for a while (not in the car . . .), and place something to distinguish his vehicle (eg a unique sticker) in both front & rear windows. He may want to tell the police of these so they can mark the vehicle record.

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

If the car has an alarm you can wire in an extra door contact switch behind the plates .
The alarm will sound when a plate is removed .

Cheers Guys,

The car will be parked up for a week or so as he is on holiday and the police have been informed of that, and it is pretty distinctive as it is a 200 Hilux (says on the back) not a standard and has a chrome roll bar and bumper with no hard top (which is unusual in itself) and light bar on the front, also the rear bumper has parking sensors in it which are pretty obvious and not available as a standard fit so it will pretty difficult to match it up with anything else other than what it is Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

was looking at that, and it would be ok at the rear but the front has only got fixing lugs.

I'm going to have a look in Halfords and online at some security screws. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi, here in France plates are riveted to the car, so you got to drill them out. It is even required by law. Might be a solution

I've seen some UK plated Jaguar sport cars that actually have the plate number painted on the front. Is that an option? It's hard to steal paint once it's been used.

Afaik , once they changed the laws to have who made the plate also included on the license a lot of the sticker makers that used to supply them for e-types etc had to stop *
Likewise the old black/silver pre-73 plates .
The only reason being is that they wouldn't look original on a concourse car with the extra info on them .

* Obviously , plates of ANY style can be sold "FOR SHOW USE ONLY" Wink

What I do with all my cars is fill the screws with aradite once you have tightened them. A chance then can't quickly unscrew them. The fronts can be pop riveted which is also a good detterant.

It has happened to me and my daughter so your dad is going to get a nasty letter soon, so do what you can to prove his whereabouts.

Fortunately for him he is in devon with the ex deputy coroner for leicestershire, so has a pretty good alibi if anything has happened over the last week.....and the car has been parked up outside the house of the assistant coroner for Derby since wed morning (somehow we know a lot of coroners) so if anything has happened then the cars whereabouts is noted well enough as it hasn't moved. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Sounds like a "dead" honest alibi

Thanks, Ian. I finally got the idea that letters represented model years and then they made the whole think a lot more confusing.
