An update from me after some investigation.
Here is a very informative clip that shows you much better than I can explain, so have a look at that first. https://youtu.be/0e-9_FuMWzI
Over to the Range Rover specific:
Pin 1 is 12 volt when ignition is on
Pin 4 is ground
Pin 5 is ground
Pin 7 is signals from engine ecu and automatic gearbox ecu. Should be between 10 and 11 volt.
Pin 8 is signals from transfer box ecu, abs ecu, right headlamp ecu, left headlamp ecu, steering angle sensor and instrument pack. Should be between 3,5 and 4 volt.
Pin 9 is ground
Pin 16 is 12 volt permanent
Note from the video that you must disconnect the battery when you check the grounds.
My error was that I had only 0,2 volt on pin 8. I disconnected all connectors I could get at one by one and suddenly ended up with voltage on the meter when I disconnected the steering angle sensor. That one is hard to get at, but you only have to remove the panel above the pedals and feel your way around there. You can feel it's the correct one because the wires are rapped in a plastic sleeve rather than the usual cloth harness. Google SRO105071 for better pictures of the sensor. ----------
