Anyone got a drone?

Thinking of getting one but there are loads out there. The popular choice seems to be the DJI Phantom range. Anyone got any experiences?

really it depends on what you want the drone for. the DJI products are very good as slow very ameteur video platforms but no good for balls out fun. the DJI are stable but lacking in fine control for serious video application so much workflow results.
that said it's easy enough to replace the bits that are a bit lacking - which is the control system and shove in something that has the finesse to produce great video results like exponential input changes that allow pro quality panning.
I build the little FPV racing quads for fun and giggles as they, to my mind, are where it is at.
here's an example of a world class pilot

I have full size multicopters such as the SkyJib and a few inbetweeners but it's the little quads that do it for me.

happy to answer any questions you have

I've recently seen one following a mountain biker, and looked it up on YouTube
Like this...
They are incredible. They follow automatically, the sensor you wear on your helmet/wrist. You stop, it stops, and hovers!
It's an incredible world of technology we live in today. But don't I read in the daily mail Very Happy that they are sort of illegal in public?
P.s. I don't actually read the Daily Mail, but those are the sort of folk that would be knocking them out of the sky with old carpet beaters if they could....

I have a SYMA X5C about £30 off the bay.
It flies quite well does stunts and can video or take pictures.
Quality is ok not up to GOPRO standard but good enough for messing about, a lot depends on what you want to do with it.
Lots of reviews for different models on Youtube but get spare battery's I get about 8 mins a charge bit less if I am filming.
I used it to video a high roof to see if I needed any tiles replacing and to just record some local scenery. Mine was a blue one! Smile

Interesting, did you have any video capture? I have been thinking about one, that seems very cheap, compared to some of the other models..

Bit Random I am sorry I have just managed to delete a couple of pics trying to upload them. However here is a picture of my arm as I was setting the drone up. I do have a couple of videos but not sure how to post them,
a friend has a big drone with a gopro that was ££££ It will go higher and further than mine but at 10 times the price I am happy with mine.

my favorite at the moment is the dji standard @£450 which is a good price considering these were around £900 at xmas time..

i fear that very soon some kind of legislation will come in which will restrict the use of these drones.. ... - .- -.

I guess my question is stan, how much better do you feel yours at over 10 times the price is compared to the one for 30? TBH, 30 seems almost too good to be true?

the x5c is a well rated drone but its like the 'saxo' of the car world, i prefer the dji standard which equates to a FF .... Wink ... - .- -.

Having played with the camera a bit and done what I wanted in way of recording property etc I just use it with the camera and legs off for casual and stunt flying I bought and tried to lern how to fly a helicopter a while ago but it was so unstable. The drone you can throw about and if you get in trouble just let go of the controls and it sorts it's self out.
Only downside it is only for light winds but I find at dusk after a beer it's a bit of fun with the nav lights flashing. Mine was a blue one! Smile

I went for the DJI Phantom 3 Pro - treated myself in December last year...

Unfortunately I've not had much time (or weather yet) to go out and play much. I can say it's a nice piece of kit.

I'm used to flying remote fixed wing planes and helicopters (which are an accident waiting to happen)

The few times I have been out with the DJI tells me that it is a lot more stable and forgiving (with return home, auto take off and landing) and full live view via the app on my iPad is quite neat.

Not going to fly like the other I have but a good bit of fun and some nice video/stills as well. Ash
