The remap figures are only what I've read on line... what ever they are, everyone us quoting 20 hp more than the top ffrr figure. If I can get it to do what I need it to do without a remap, all well and good, but if it's in need of a little boost to maintain lockup speed so be it

It surprises me that there isn't a gearbox conversion for the TD6 available.... after all the GM box wasn't the only one used with that engine.... and there are a lot of better gearboxes used in the later versions... lets face it BMW are getting TDV8 power out of the Bi Turbo X5's  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Are but the 7 series BMW used a ZF box with that engine, so there must be an ECU that talks ZF 5 speed that the rest of the car will understand..... And maybe the later 6 / 8 speed boxes can be made to talk as well.... and then I do believe that Manual was available on the X5, so I can't see why that couldn't be made to fit..... And although I'd prefer an automatic box, at least with a manual I could leave it in say 4th gear and not have to worry about the clutch slipping all the time, like the bloody GM box does.....

I wish that I had the abillaty to re program the ECU cos the more I think about what the gearbox does and what it should do.... I end up with the realisation that it was programmed by someone who has no idea about towing and only understands how to get a soft gear change..... the bloody tow mode makes things worse for the gearbox not better  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Yes, it's not beyond the realms of possibility to achieve it, but I suspect that the LR differences mean the whole lot has to be reprogrammed etc.  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Nice idea, but I don't really want to be choosing every gear and gear change.... that's why I got an automatic!
And there are 2 problems that I can see, firstly they don't list the Range Rover.... that could be an issue, and secondly, HOW MUCH By the time I've paid shipping and Vat I'll be close to the cost of a new box

If I end up keeping it I will be looking in to the ECO tune remap, my only worry is what happens when the car's been told it's in tow mode..... what does the box do then? if it still fully locks then great, knowing my luck it will go in to clutch munching mode If only there was a way to override the ECU and hard wire the lock up. We shall see, I'd rather not get shot as it is the devil I know, rather than take a chance on another car, but if it really isn't man enough for the job, I will still be flogging a dead horse  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... So I'm back to getting the thing fixed, and then change it for something more suitable for heavy towing I really liked my ffrr, except when it's throwing its' little hissy fits, which is a fair bit at the moment... maybe I wont miss it that much

Funnily enough I was reading through the TDV8 manual a few months ago and (relatively speaking) thinking how simple it would be to design a circuit to make the engine be an engine...

If someone could set up the "tune", i.e. telling me when to fire an injector with respect to something else then it would be pretty simple. All the sensors are there and the workshop manual basically tells you most of what you need to know about how to talk to them directly. The rest can be figured out from an oscilloscope.

No farting around with reprogramming ECUs etc. just take sensor feeds directly in and outputs to injectors etc and bobs your uncle.

If I could find a similar manual for the gearbox then that could be done as well. Although if the engine became an engine then you could just put a manual on it... Ed

3.6 TDV8 towing 5.2te (inc' trailer). The FF did this many many times and the trip included a mile up a 1 in 8 plus several shorter but steeper climbs yet never had to come below 45 (B roads - not motorways - so no run up). No problems at all and compared to the D3 before it chalk & cheese (engine not chassis).

Same load, different vehicle

Remapped 2.2 Puma 90. With the gearing advantage it's not too bad and economy wise no different to the TDV8 or D3.

My driving style got me (according to the OBC) 19 from the TDV6, 20 from the TDV8 and 19 from the Puma (brim to brim). Going by that I reckon the Puma is actually the most economical of them all.

TDV6 D3 remapped is great but it aint no TDV8 and for site work you can't beat a Deafner

I don't for one minute doubt that the TDV8 ffrr will tow everything that I hook it to.... I just can't afford one, especially with the large Road Fund Tax increase. At least I can get a TDV6 that is with in the same tax bracket as the TD6, and the other consideration is that I only tow for half the distance that I cover, and then I return solo, so the slightly higher MPG from the TDV6 would make a noticeable difference over the year.

My preferred option would be a TDV8 4.4, as they are returning an even better MPG than the TDV6, but alas the wallet say NO

As far as the weight of your trailers go... yes you have me beat... but mine are partially liquid, and the C of G moves about depending on the terrain.... and as the liquid doesn't move in a linear direction, when you get the wobbles it can get really bad very quickly  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Them there constantly on the move loads are indeed tricky criters!!
I feel your pain - why does it almost feel worse when you stop and wait for the swaying to end

My Luing bull weighed approx 1200kg and was too long to have a gate in the trailer so he wondered around constantly when being transported When he came to the front of the trailer you were staring at the sky and when he moved to the back the horizon disappeared. I found that by braking he moved forward and levlled things out a tad Trailering 3000 litres of water in IBCs on the flat bed was a doddle by comparison

T'was funny watching folks reactions when we were stopped at traffic lights - the towcar was stood still but the trailer was all over the place

IMHO there's nowt wrong with the TDV6 or the D3 that houses it. But - I'm daft enough to like the 2.2 TDCi so go figure. I believe that after the TD6 the TDV6 will be a revelation but if you ever try one I'll bet you covet the TDV8 (even if it a lowly 3.6).

Good luck with whatever you decide to buy (so long as it comes from the LR stable ).

And your right a full IBC is a doddle, try one half full.... much more interesting

Now if you were to squish your IBC so that it was 3 meters long, you'll get a better idea of what a loo is like + + (but without the smile!)

I know that a TDV8 is the car that I want.... unfortunately the TD6 has eaten all the TDV8 funds, , so I've got to take drastic action.... otherwise all the profit that I make will be used up trying to bailout my sinking ship  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

UPDATE........201603.9.......

I had a call from the very very nice transmission specialist and it would appear to be sorted , had a recon valve block installed and another flush and filter..... He recons that the new fluid that I put in dislodged a pocket of crap and this destroyed the valve block That'll teach me to do nice things for the ffrr All I have to do now is pick it up and test it.... I'll let you know later..... Now where's my block of wood and Rabbits' foot...  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
