Australia 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Atacama Sand
Lightning Ridge

We recently did a trip to Lightning Ridge, so I thought I'd post few pics. Lightning Ridge is a small mining town in north west NSW. It's a very eclectic place. It is the home of the black opal. We loved it.

It has a small volunteer visitor centre on the edge of town. Miners dump truck loads there for visitors to scratch through. We found quite a few pieces, even red opal.

It also sits on top of the Great Artesian Basin which is an enormous underground water source. On the edge of town is a pool where hot water flows up from deep underground. The water temp was about 40 C when we were there. I went in 3 times one day.

We went underground.

Saw some nice sunsets.

And a few gravel roads.

Love this! Brings back memories - was in Coober Pedy a while back. Got a lift in a LR defender with 500,000 miles (and no brakes!!). The Driver (Big Mike) had just done a stretch of 7 years for shooting his partner with a magnum .57 for stealing some of his Opal share.

Ended up noodling in the ulu at midnight with him and Chinese pete (opal dealer). Wondered if I was digging my own grave at one point - no-one even know I was out there, but I needn't have worried. They even let me keep the first opal we found!

Turned out to be a great bunch. Thumbs Up

DB

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.

I need to remember to bring it back up to standard height for these trips. I used the IID tool to drop it 20mm to make it easier to get in and out. ______________________________

Great pictures, indeed that last one is fantastic.

Hot springs are great, reminds me of Dalhousie Springs on the Western Simpson.

Cheers, Jerry

Don't get me started on the Simpson Desert Jerry. Dalhousie is another great spot. We did that trip in the Perentie 110 wagon.

Dalhousie hot springs pic.

Hi Pete, Oh wow!

I did it in a 300TDi Defender, crossed on one tank of fuel!

Great pictures, what memories (now homesick!!!).

Thanks for taking the trouble.

Cheers, Jerry

Oh please stop. I *love* Australia. Spent some time there in 98/99 and should have bloody stayed. Sadly SWMBO won't leave the UK whilst her parents are still alive, which is understandable but still effin irritating.
