Age old question: petrol vs diesel. I'm leaning towards the TDV8 for the easy torque and more acceptable economy, but wondering if I should expand my selection to include an SC to help with the search? Has anyone any real world comparisons on driving, economy and, much more importantly, reliability?

Thanks joker. Interesting read and full of the positives of the SC's smoothness, but not much comparison the the TDV8 on reliability or economy.

5.0 SC ,gear stick with 6 speed box, mpg around 20 , will have most options

4.4 tdv8, rotary knob with 8 speed box, mpg around 30 , comes in vogue, vogue se , westminster and autobiography , options depending on model

I previously owned a 2009 3.6TDV8 and now have a 2010 5.0SC.

I have to say the Petrol engine really is an amazing power plant and gives a much enhanced driving experience, it's so lively and responsive.
I can't comment on reliability as no problems with either under my ownership other than a FBH issue on my current ride .
Go for the Diesel if economy is all important or if MPG is not crucial get the Petrol for the sheer sense of occasion on every drive.

The Diesel performance is adequate of course but the Petrol really is something else.

Stan says around 30mpg for the diesel.
Mine has averaged 27 over 12months usage.

Just checked my dash display and I've averaged 15.4 mpg over the last 826 miles of mostly suburban driving.
Best that I noted last year was 24mpg on the way to Cornwall from London.
It's fairly easy to average 20 plus on 'A' Roads or Motorways with a light right foot.

Oh that's not too bad. Certainly not sufficiently low to put me off. I know fuel isn't cheap, but I see depreciation and other running costs as more expensive. So long as the mpg isn't so incredibly poor it puts me off using it, it's fine.
