As the tittle says, does the TDV8 and the new 4.4 require premium diesel or standard ?

I'm guessing just your run of the mill diesel , i have test driven the new 4.4 TDV8 and the salesguy never mentioned anything about the use of premium or any other diesel for that matter ........

Often use that Shell Power Diesel - cannot really comment on if it cleans the inside of the engine components like they say - but it definately gives it a little more ummfff when accelerating

Simple thermodynamics:

The heat released for a fuel is proportional to the amount of oxygen available for combustion (Google 'cone calorimeter' for reference). Hence, for a fixed dispacement (e.g. 4.4 l) the heat released for regular diesel = the heat released for 'super' diesel. Hence, for a normally aspirated engine there is no gain.

However, a turbo allows greater amounts of oxygen per revolution by compressing the air that goes into the cylinders. A 'super' diesel tolerates greater boost pressures vs regular diesel. Therefore, higher boost pressures = more oxygen = more fuel burnt per revolution = more power.

In practice, however, you are unlikely to notice the power increase, and the 'gain' in fuel economy arising from the gain in power will be more than wiped out by the excess cost per litre of the fuel.

Avoid IMHO.
