Curve Ball Insurance Query . . .

Afternoon all -

Might be one for the classic car guys . . .
Looking at buying an EU registered vehicle from either Spain or Portugal to bring back to Blighty.
Initial enquiries point to insurance companies not liking this ?
Anybody with experience of this conundrum out there please ?
Cheers !

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Hi Paul, I've had a look at a couple of forums over here. You might try either Adrian Flux https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/ or Aviva. I don't know how accurate the information is but both appear to have assisted with insurance for importing from the EU.

I presume that Aviva is probably the same Aviva as in the UK.

You know about the DVLA/HMRC requirements? John

Thankyou John - I'll have a look.
You mention DVLA / HMRC, in terms of what ? It will be an older vehicle so I don't believe there to be any VAT issues.
As for DVLA, the plan would be to get it here and use it while preparing for UK MOT & subsequent registration.
But I'm sure it can't be that simple !

Shouldn't be any problems with VAT on an older vehicle. Helpful to have documents which show it has been paid.

If you find a vehicle make sure that a Certificate of Conformity is easily obtainable. Normally not a problem but something to bear in mind. Having said that, if the original registration document has an "e" number on it then a C of C shouldn't be necessary

There are some restrictions on age of imports and time limits on re-registering but not insurmountable.

DVLA information here:
https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/overview

Hope you succeed in your quest.

Thankyou John - very helpful !

I'll drop you a PM sometime if successful.

I had enquired with Footman James ref insurance as I've had classic cover with them before.
Whilst they will provide cover from the VIN, they won't for the purpose of getting it back here. Hey ho !
