The Magic Sponge trick

Saw this is someone else's thread and thought why not try it, for 99p in a Pound shop for two sponges what can possibly go wrong?

Nothing is the answer. This is absolutely astonishing. It cleans the leather better than any product I've bought in the past. I used it today in my Discovery, which had a strange bubbly mark on the headrest, probably from hair products and grease. Anyway, no product could get it off. 20 seconds with a magic sponge and it's like new. The entire drivers seat was very shiny despite all my previous efforts, now it's a lush Matt black again just waiting for a coat of Gliptone leather conditioner.

I shall do the Range Rover drivers seat next.

I'd be interested to know if anyone tries this on a light coloured leather that has the dark stains from jeans, belts, dirt etc.

Here's a pic of the Auto selector in my D3. The left is untouched and shiny, the right side is cleaned with the magic sponge.

Is the sponge impregnated with something or are they just sponges and you used them with......?

Often called Magic Erasers, the secret behind these types of erasers is a material commonly called melamine foam. With just a little water, melamine foam can dig in and destroy stains that other products can't touch.

Thanks to RRUK for bringing this to our attention, I'll be getting some myself to try. Think it might be prudent to go gently with them at first, wouldn't want to damage the surface. 2006MY 4.2 SC

Where do you get them?
I've tried Morrison's and Saintsbury's, but they don't seem to stock them?

Most supermarkets have them, used them for years now, remember these are abrasive... use them on piano black or any painted surface and some polished metal and they can permanently damage the surface...

Go over the painted Oxford leather a lot of FF's use and you can take the top colour off...

They also take the soft touch finish off a lot of internal plastic...

They are superb and do get lots of marks off other things won't touch but please be careful and don't use them regularly...

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

If you get one in a supermarket you'll pay triple the cost.

Pound shops are the place. Like Haylands said, use with care, they are very good.

Done my seats, arm rests and door pulls now as all in leather and a bit shiny. Only takes a few swipes, don't scrub for ages. Discovery 4 HSE

HAHA Yep 100! At those prices you cant go wrong! They are good for cleaning the corian worktops as well. To be fair the ones from China aren't of the same quality as the ones from the supermarket and don't last anywhere near as long but SWMBO can get cracking with them in the house too!!

They will eventually strip off the PU layer on the leather - as above, they're abrasive so like using fine wet and dry. On the positive side, once you've stripped it off, the Gliptone might actually sink in.
