England 2003 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

5/40 castrol edge and no burning smell just leaking oil when it is running which sprays over the cross member then drops when stationary. It doesn't leak when static and cold so doesn't appear to be any sump gaskets etc

England 2003 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

Update:

FF now fixed and back to its former glory. Removed the gearbox to find the gearbox dowels missing, the rear seal housing fitted with silicon to seal it and no gasket, some of the bolts with no seals and an exposed starter cable so all in all Im surprised the thing never leaked more oil than it did or caught fire..... Evil or Very Mad

The gearbox, engine etc is all good with only 60k on it so it looks like someone has attempted a rear seal change with no clue what they were doing. Tw&ts......!

Now has all new and missing bits replaced, drained and changed the gearbox oil while it was off and replaced the strainer. And while looking for this leak originally gave it new oil, filter, pollen filter, air filter, plugs and swapped the rocker gaskets for good measure and a new suspension compressor as it was a bit slow - so after a few quid, hopefully sorted for a while.

P.s gearbox is now smooth as silk with some new juice in it....

Mine is leaking and as the car has an extended warranty I put it into the main dealer on the 9th August, they phoned to say it was the rear crankshaft seal and it is a 9 hour job so they wanted to book the car in 2 weeks later.

2 days later front under tray fell off just outside the dealers, turned out the workshop were not told I was getting the car back.

Just before it was due in they phoned to say the seal was on back order so delayed again.

I phoned yesterday and still no seals, apparently LR have a commercial problem with the seal manufacturer.

Ian

Order one through BMW - all the same and probably in stock.

My local Indy had one on the shelf - £81 I think for the complete seal and housing

It's a 4.4 TDV8.

Good to hear it all worked out Thumbs Up
Amazes me why someone would have originally gone to all that trouble to remove the gearbox and then bodge the repair inside. Jobs like that you want to do it once so do it right.

Incidentally you can just replace the seal without the housing although from what you say I understand yours had been tampered with so wise to replace both.

As IanV8 says he has a TDV8 so there won't be a corresponding BMW part however if it's a 4.4 it's a Ford engine and there might be a corresponding Ford part although the engine I believe is only used in the Range Rover and no other makes/models so perhaps not. It is however just a seal and like bearings if you know the seal number or dimensions it can be cross referenced to other seal manufacturers. A main dealer won't do that though as no doubt it would have to be OEM for the warranty.
