So how do i get the interior lights to come on when i open or unlock the door?

I hesitate to comment before the (much) more experienced members here ...
... and I don't know if it's the same on a 2016 (mine's 12 years older ) ...
but it wouldn't be something simple like the auto function being switched off, would it?

Nah, there is no switch, there is only a touchpad type of switch to turn them on and off manually 2010 defender utility
