So, some of you might have seen the feature on breakfast TV about how the coastguards are using Newfoundlands as rescue dogs. Needless to say they never included my tweet.

I'm looking after one of these fekkin things for one of SWMBOs friends (They're all on holiday in Greece) and I can tell you 100% they are not practical at all as pets. For one thing this B*stard is the size of a grizzly bear, drops landmines on my lawn the size of a bloody basketball and the drooling, Jesus, it constantly looks like it's eating a trainer with the laces hanging out of its gob. Ridiculously big, drooling horrid thing which is completely unsuitable as a pet

I have dogs, 3 Border Collies so I'm not anti dog, but I am anti these things as pets. Really irresponsible journalism 'cos there will be a load of people who buy one on the back of that feature.

The hair on those things.....I bet coming indoors from rainy walk, and the stink!.

Had two newfys a few years back, and no they're not indoor pets, they won't thank you for a nice warm comfy home, they are better off outside, the colder the better, but if ever there was a human equivalent to a dog, then you won't have to go any further than a newfy, they are really intelligent. Lost both of mine now, I would have another, but the last one broke my heart, if ever there was a true friend, he was there .
But you are right, they are big , hairy, slobber and massive poo's, don't let them charge you as they'll take your legs out.
Me and wifey researched as much as possible, but you don't get to know everything until you own one.

Don't do it Mick, they really aren't suitable as house pets. Yes they look cute and cuddly but the sheer size of them and the constant drooling are tiresome after the first 10 minutes. Then the reality of another 10 years of basketball sized turds, dog hair everywhere, ruined carpets, ruined furniture and several million kitchen rolls to mop up the drool begins to sink in.

Horses live in stables for a reason. They're just too damned big to share a house with humans. In fact, I recall being at an industrial estate a while back, looking for a specific place. Stopped to ask this guy which unit and a huge Irish Wolfhound stuck his head in the window of the FF. When I gave the command "Down" the owner pointed out that his front paws were actually on the floor.

We used to show Tibetan Mastiffs. One of our friends had a Tibetan Mastiff (He was the dad of our Tibetan Mastiff - the Dog, not our friend Karen!!) and they also had a Newfie. They lived down in Cornwall (Seaton, near Looe) and their Newfie used to love going for a swim. His party piece however was that whenever he had a swim it used to make him feel a bit randy, and he once tried to rape a Shetland Pony, which gave him a good kicking for his troubles!
