Yep, loads of things to look out for with a newf. Hipscores from dam & sire are one, they can also suffer from bloat, if you don't get it to the vets within 20 mins your dog is dead, please don't ask me how I know Big Cry ever tried moving a 12 stone dead weight on your own.
they don't have a very good lifespan 10 to 12 years old is usually the norm, but do agree with mzplcg, people only see a furry ball of fluff and don't consider the adult dog.
don't get me wrong if you have time and patience, they will be a friend forever, training can take up to two years, they are headstrong and stubbon, you can train other more subordinate dogs in weeks or a few months, but the newfy has ideas of its own. Never ever teach one to shake a paw, because it can inadvertently knock a child over, also if they lean on you it's bad enough but can crush a child.
you have been warned Thumbs Up

Japanese Akita, certainly not a house dog, 140lbs of muscle. In 13 years I had him I never locked my cars when they were in the back yard.

I bet the Akita doesn't drop 3 foot strings of drool either.

Not sure why people think Newfoundlands are intelligent either. I'm used to Collie levels of intelligence and this thing is a birdbrain by comparison. Absolutely no redeeming features that I can see.
