The Rev counter bounce is a good indicator but only a slight fluctuation

I just read this thread and have a dilemma, my fatty has just hit 120k and has all the classic TC symptoms so my question is this. Do I go to the trouble of removing the box and replacing the TC which leaves me with transmission that's done all those miles or put up with it for now and keep saving the £ for a fully reconditioned system when it eventually breaks down?

I just got a quote of £197 + VAT to recondition the torque converter.

Everyone is saying it should sound like driving over a cattle grid but I ring that it sounds a lot more subtle than that. And it is intermittent??

How much is a full re condition?

Depends how long you intend to keep it, You may be ok with just the TC if you have the petrol 02-05 but I decided that I didn't want to be taking the transmission out again if i could help it so opted for the rebuild that i did myself but if you going to go for the rebuild and you have the petrol 5 speed ZF box then RRPhil sells the recon transmission and they are as good or better than new! and he also sells the recon TC as well as there are only certain companies that can effectively recon the TC.
The diesel TC go due to the failing valve block which if not repaired will cause the TC to fail again at around 10K miles if you are lucky killing the transmission again.

Who was the quote from and i take it that is just for an exchange unit and not fitted?

What vehicle do you have?

The way i determined the TC was at fault on my 04 petrol was to keep a constant light accelerating throttle up a long gradual incline and the TC used to vibrate up until around 55 - 60 mph at which point it should stop as the LUC should be locked and when i was getting the vibration the rev counter would move very slightly.

be careful jacking the back up with only a small amount of axle stand on the wood as when i jack up mine it moves around quite a bit from one side to the other, i use cheap railway sleepers and sometimes drive mine up on them

They did mine and all good, JPAT also do them and PM RRPhil to see how much he charges for one already done off the shelf as an exchange i believe.

holidaychicken, I intend to keep the car for a few years as it's a very clean '03 V8 Vogue in the colour combination I really wanted also I only want to do the job once so I'm leaning towards a fully reconditioned unit from RRPhil when needed. Currently the symptoms are not severe so I can live with it for a while longer.

That was my thoughts with mine, the ZF5HP24 transmission is much more forgiving than the GM in the TD6 as when the TC in that unit begins to let go it takes down the transmission as well by pumping metal filings through it.
You should be ok for a while but it was the vibration that bugged the life out of me as it spoils the drive at a time when you are driving most relaxingly.
If you want guaranteed good advice then it is always best to speak to Phil as i only repeat what i can remember him writing down over many forums
