Picked up some brake cleaner and a tin of gunk...cars garage, wee blow heater on and I'm going to get the fatty clean..things a dirty midden just now! ..slightly off topic but I've just noticed this hard black pipe that comes from the lower side of the right-hand side of the engine..its not connected to anything and I cant seem to find where its meant to go?? Never noticed this before tbh...

i always use a old brush and some paraffin

Is it he breather for the battery or from the air box?

Gunk do an aerosol can these days, Halfords sell it, picked one up a while ago to have a bash at cleaning the engine compartment to my old Jag XJS. I haven't got around to it yet but it might be easier to get it in to all the nooks and crannies.

Kbald..its routed from under the engine..right side as you look in? Not connected to battery or airbox?

I do believe the pipe in question is a breather pipe gearbox or Axel

Correct that is the diff breather and would normally be routed under the plastic cover over the right hand cam cover.
When my PC has finished trying to fix itself I'll post a pic

It sits in the channel next to the battery cable, it is to keep it at maximum height in case anyone is daft enough to take there FF wading
