Thanks for your opinions chaps. Going to view a 2007 TDV8 tomorrow just for comparison. I think any range would feel slow to me as im used to 420bhp on my 335d, so i guess thats why im looking at the tdv8. Should get a bit more economy and can remap if i want. I do like modding so im sure i will make my mark somehow.
Just wanted to clarify a few things:
1) Does the TDV8 have a DPF?
2) what about a drain plug and dipstick?
3) i know short journeys aren't good for any engine, but would it really affect the diesel?
1. Mine doesn't but I think it depends where it was destined for.
2. The 3.6 tdv8 and 4.2SC both have an engine oil dipstick. The 3.6 has two simp plugs. Most garages seem to vacuum out the waste oil.
3. Short trips are not good for the tdv8. I understand the EGR opens go warm up the motor after starting. If mainly doing short trips the EGR will be open for a larger proportion of your travel. I'm sure there are other reasons short trips aren't good for this diesel. If mainly doing short trips I would buy the 4.2SC.
I would stick with the 4.2 that is a very nice option. The reason for the sway is there is a lot more wheel travel than an X5. about 10" in the front and 12" or so in the rear and that is for off roading reasons so that the tires can maintain contact with the ground even under undulating surfaces.
The 4.2 has two variants a BMW style interior 05 in UK and 06 in USA, and the full Ford treatment which was introduced in 07 in the USA and 06 in UK.
The full ford is the better of the two because there are less issues with trying to integrate with certain BMW electronics, there is pelter cell cooled seats, there is terrain response, and the interior is now more durable (a plastic of a certain color is actually that color and not painted). I would certainly recommend getting an 06/07 Full Ford Supercharged 4.2. Best L322 imho.
Sounds like your looking at a similar price point/age to where I expect to be looking. Everything I have read and the advice I have had all points to the 4.2s/c. also if I have interpreted the advice correctly that you are better off with the 07 face lift. I assume that when jag took over and changed the mechanicals but kept the interior the same 05/06 that the plastics etc didn't get changed until the face lift. I am not sure on this though.
For me I have got 6 years experience of running this engine and gearbox combo all be it in an XKR. What I can say is that in the 60k I have put on the car (taking it up to 112k) it has been a reliable combination of engine and gearbox. I have done preventative maintenance on the gearbox and had the fluids changed at 60k, so it is probably due doing again soon. I have had a number of minor issues with the LPG conversion on the jag, minor coolant weep from vapouriser, injector pack up after 40k etc but nothing that would put me off running on LPG again.
I would not agree with the comments about LPG and stations stopping selling it. this is not something I have noticed around Sheffield and on a long drive to Devon this week I was actually surprised how easy it was to pick up at many of the M5 services. also the price variation between m/way filling stations and your local Morrisons seems to be much less for LPG compared with petrol or diesel. The consensus does seem to be that the Ajv8's need valve lube.

Thanks. Do a lot of ppl blank the EGR then?
Also hoping a UK member can confirm if the UK 3.6 TDV8 has a dpf?
Don't get hung up on 420bhp as the 4.2 S/C has 395bhp but weighs twice as much as your car. If you are doing low mileage then get a petrol, mega miles then get a diesel.

Nah to be honest i tried a supercharghed 4.2 and it felt really slow. No offense to anyone on here but i guess i am used to a much much lighter car which as you say will obviously be faster.
At the moment the tdv8s are cheaper than the S/C, roughly £3-4k for 2007 models, so im thinking diesel even though i will do less than 10k miles per annum. I would just like some confirmation on the DPF
Supercharged for me.
I do very low miles and couldn't have a diesel but with the SC you know it's top of the range, every one will have the same features.
Also they are rarer so there's a bit of prestige there IMO.
Yeah, they are cheaper to be fair.
Shouldn't be any difference in spec as the SC is essentially Vogue SE trim, different exterior finishes though.
I more meant, you'll need to specifically look for a 'TDV8 Vogue SE' (might be harder to find) to get full spec where as any SC is Vogue SE, they don't come in Vogue or HSE.
